Black Pioneers: Jimi Hendrix

IMG_8526.PNG

Black History Month is finally here! We’re really excited for this month because not only is it a month to focus on the amazing history of black culture, we can use our platform to showcase the talent of black pioneers who have laid the groundwork for musicians today. Our first episode opens with the talented rock and roll star Jimi Hendrix an artist who transcends generations.  Although Jimi Hendrix had a very brief career, he is widely regarded as one of the most celebrated rock guitarists, singers, and songwriters in the music industry, earning a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In addition to being widely celebrated, Hendrix's career laid the groundwork for rock and rolls wide acceptance and he has continued to influence established stars and rising stars today.

Born November 27, 1942, Hendrix's first experiences with music started at a very young age. He began to work on his sound, drawing influence from big names including B.B. King, Muddy Waters, and Buddy Holly. Unfortunately due to a lack of resources, Hendrix was unable to get a teacher to teach him how to read music. However, this roadblock didn’t hold him back as he was able to teach himself to play guitar after his father purchased him a second-hand guitar from one of his friends. Shortly after Jimi was given the guitar the embers of a music career lit up and Hendrix formed his first band-- The Velvetones. After a brief 3 month period Hendrix left the group to pursue a career of his own, and around this time is when Hendrix's father purchased him his first electric guitar, which was the Supro Ozark 1560s. Like any teenager, at the time Hendrix was up to no good and unfortunately, his antics got him caught up with the law and after being caught twice riding in stolen cars leading to be given a choice of prison or the army. He immediately enlisted in the Army on May 31, 1961, and after basic training, he was stationed at Fort Ord in California. Like any creative who has to be forced into a regiment, Hendrix described his experience saying  "There's nothing but physical training and harassment here for two weeks, then when you go to jump school ... you get hell. They work you to death, fussing and fighting." He begged his father to send him his guitar in the mail and his father relented and sent the guitar shortly after. Finally getting back into his music Hendrix's obsession with the instrument soon turned into him neglecting his duties, which of course got him into trouble, but not enough to stop him from continuing to play. Continuing his career in the Army, Hendrix was discovered by fellow servicemen Billy Cox who was impressed by his technique. After becoming acquainted, the pair went on to play at base clubs on weekends with other musicians in the loosely formed band The Casuals.

Finally able to balance his love for music and his career responsibilities of being a serviceman, Hendrix completed paratrooper training and was awarded the screaming eagles patch on January 11, 1962, but his personal conduct began to slack and he began to draw constant criticism for his superiors, with his platoon sergeant saying; “He has no interest whatsoever in the Army ... It is my opinion that Private Hendrix will never come up to the standards required of a soldier. I feel that the military service will benefit if he is discharged as soon as possible." The sergeant got him and Hendrix was honorably discharged on June 29, 1962, and thus began the first steps in his career.

IMG_8541.PNG

Shortly after Hendrix was discharged, Billy Cox soon followed and the pair linked up again and moved to Clarksville, Tennessee to form the King Kasuals and began playing at low-paying gigs. Getting better and better the duo was then able to relocate to Nashville Jefferson street-- which at the time was the center of the city's black community-- the home of a burgeoning rhythm and blues scene. Gaining recognition, the two were able to obtain a residency at a local venue at the time called the Club Del Morocco and over the next two years, Hendrix was able to make a living on his performance circuit throughout the south with multiple venues under the Theaters Owners Booking Association (TOBA). In addition to playing with his own band, Hendrix collaborated with other emerging artists at the time including Ike & Tina Turner, Sam Cooke, and more. In 1964, feeling he had outgrown the circuit and frustrated with the rules of bandleaders Hendrix left to pursue a career on his own and made his move to Harlem New York where befriended Lithofayne Pridgeon  (known as Faye) who later became his love interest. As a native to the Harlem music scene Faye introduced Hendrix to her web of connections and while working on growing his career Faye provided Hendrix with shelter and support. After about a month in the area, Hendrix won his first prize from the legendary Apollo Theater amateur contest and parlayed the recognition into landing a seat in the Harlem club circuit. Further building his connections and his name in the area, Hendrix was then able to catch the attention of Ronnie Isley and after an audition, Hendrix landed a spot as the guitarist in the Isley's Brothers back up band, I.B. Specialists.

IMG_8540.PNG

After a brief time with the brothers and going on tour with them for most of 1964 Hendrix left the band in October and shortly after joined Little Richard's band, the Upsetters. For much of 1965, Hendrix spent most of his time with Richard but due to constantly clashing with Richard over things like tardiness, wardrobe, and other antics, Hendrix was then fired from the band. Never one to sit and wait around Hendrix signed his first record deal with Juggy Murray at Sue Records and briefly rejoined the Isley Brothers, and later that year Curtis Knight and The Squires. He also signed a three-year recording contract with Ed Chaplin, which later caused legal trouble and career problems for Hendrix but did little to derail his career. After recording songs and touring with the Isley Brother and the Squires he was also able to pick up tour dates with Joey Dee and the Starliters. By 1966, after a string of success, Hendrix made his move to Greenwich Village in New York. Similar to his previous moves when starting up in a new location Hendrix played the circuit rounds in the area and he caught up with Animals bassist Chas Chandler in July of that year. Impressed by Hendrix’s performance, Chandler signed Hendrix in September of 1966 to an agreement that had Hendrix move to London to form a new band and from there the stage name of Jimi Hendrix was born, and The Jimi Experience started taking root.

Featuring bassist Noel Redding, and drummer Mitch Mitchell, the Jimi Hendrix Experience began to gain local recognition in London by the fall of 1966, leading to the band's first single "Hey Joe" that spent ten weeks on the UK's charts topping out at number by early 1967. Capitalizing off the success of the single the band shortly released the first album “Are You Experienced”, gaining national recognition overnight,  The Jimi Hendrix Experience became one of the most popular acts globally, and with that Hendrix was no longer an underground act but an international star.  Following the release of  Are, You Experienced" the band then released “Axis: Bold As Love” which did just as good, if not better than the previous project.

Finally more in control of his career and able to make his own decisions, Hendrix relocated back to the United States and built his own recording studio Electric Lady Studios which became the title of his next releases “Electric LadyLand” which followed the success of the last two projects. Unfortunately due to career demands, and disagreements among bandmates, The Experience disbanded in 1969. The breakup initially hurt Hendrix but the artist rebounded quickly and in the summer of 1969 Hendrix played at the Woodstock Music & Art Fair and was able to connect with musicians Mitch Michell, Billy Cox, Juma Sultan, and Jerry Velez.

IMG_8538.PNG

Following Woodstock, Hendrix entered a new era of his life with the designing collaboration and forming of the Gypsys which featured Hendrix as a guitarist, Billy Cox as the bassist, and Buddy Miles as the drummer. After formally getting together the trio launched into 1970 with a series of New Year's performances which were recorded and released on the Band of Gypsys album. By 1970, after bringing back Mitch Mitchell to play the drums, The Jimi Hendrix Experience was formed once again. With the band back together they went on to start recording a new LP titled First Rays Of The New Rising Sun. Unfortunately, Hendrix was unable to see the release of this project due to his tragic death.

A very brief life, as well as career Jimi Hendrix time here, was spent in devotion to music, and his love for it took him places that most people never get a chance to see. One of the few black faces of rock and roll, during a time when commercial success was primarily monopolized by white artists, Jimi Hendrix’s sound, face, and image was the foundation for a variety of artists including; David Bowie, Lenny Kravitz, Prince, and most recently Future; who adopted the artist's name as a moniker, as well as the title for a project. One of the best to ever do it, Jimi Hendrix was a pioneer in his own right and deserves his place in history as one of the greatest rock and roll artists and as well as African American artists in music history.

7Latenights welcome to Nefarious Supply! To get the interview started, tell us about yourself? Who is 7Latenights and what led you down the path of becoming a musician?

7Latenights , is a hustler , out going , and a genuine person. And what led me down the path of making music and taking it seriously was when I didn’t have nothing or nobody to turn to , I’d write. I always knew how to write music , but I always sounded different on the mic. One day my cousin / manager foreign paid for some studio time back when I was 17 , back in 2017 for my birthday and I came out with a song called “Pull Up” and my school went crazy for it. But I was still ripping and running. But a couple situations happened and made a choice to stick with it because I had a story to tell. And I learned the business aspect of it, and dropped top of the year 2020. The rest was history.

Where are you based out of and how has this area influenced you as well as your sound?

I’m based out of Freehold New Jersey , The “Free”. And just growing up in the environment I was in it taught me early what love was, bro code ,how to hustle and get what you want. My family is big , and my father was known. My mom knew everybody on the every corner, everybody on every corner knew me. Just being around all the OG’s, and experiencing life that an average kid wouldn’t experience at that age influenced me to have the hunger and that passion when hop in the booth.

To follow up to the last questions, how is the area for underground creatives? What’s the culture like, the networking, and overall vibe?

We didn’t really have anybody that rapped in our area Until Bust G (R.I.P) came along and created a wave that made everyone want to rap and go to the studio with him. Then a few guys out of the area started coming up the same time I was in the studio. And we created networks outside of our town and shared these important people amongst our circle. Our culture is real, and unique everybody has they own style of doing things. And we all grew up at a popular park around our neighborhood so everybody knew each other. The vibe was cool.

How long you have been making music and what artists would you say have had the biggest impact on you and your music?

I’ve been making music for 2 years seriously. And artist like Chris Brown, Drake, Tory, Future ,Young Thug , Meek Mil, and many more influenced me just listening to them and how they sell the real feeling what your feeling like in whatever mood you’re in and either making you feel better or worst. Gave me the upper hand to really hop on any subject any song and get it done.

image1.jpeg

Even though 2020 slowed the rest of the world down you stayed focused and dropped 5 singles, 2 EPs and a deluxe project! How did you manage to stay focused during such a crazy time, and for artists who are having a hard time what is some advice you would give them?

What made me stay focused was seeing how my mom and sister was not struggling but a little rough around the edges during quarantine. I was in a this had to get better mood. So I locked in every day and was recording heat. If it wasn’t to my standards the songs got tossed. And for any artist having a hard time whether it is writers block, or you dealing with something at home, or feeling like nothings being done. Relax and write out some goals, or do something that’s going to inspire you to go make the music that you want to create. And you can’t skip days out of the studio or else someone else took your opportunity, someone else made a hit while you decided to miss sessions. You have to be dedicated if you want to be successful.

To get into your music, talk to us about your first EP ‘Do Better’. How did that project come together? Who did you work with and what are some of your favorite tracks on the project?

I was going through a situation with a girl at a time and being introduced to a new girl at the time. And I just started singing at the time. I worked by myself in the studio and I leased beats from producers. My favorite track till this day on there is LUV ME.

32110584-C931-43A3-993C-DF36CA583082.JPG

Following that EP, tell us about your second EP ‘7Latenights’. How long did it take you to put this one together? Who did you collaborate with for this one?

It was all me on the project. And this project took me a week to create.

After an amazing 2020, what are your next steps for 2021? What are some goals you want to accomplish and where do you want to be by the end of the year?

To keep my foot on the gas, I got more heat on the way. I want to heavy hitter by the end of the year , and I want to be able to give back and be the top dog of my lane.

Shout some friends out! Who should we feature next on Nefarious Supply?

Carlon - Nashville Native

IMG-1943.JPG

Carlon welcome to Nefarious Supply! To get this interview started, tell us a little bit more about yourself. Who is Carlon? How long have you been making music, and what led you down the path of becoming a musician?

I am a West Nashville native. As a kid I moved at an early age to Smyrna then to Murfreesboro. I’ve honestly been making music seriously for about a year and a half. The reason I started making taking things seriously is because I made a promise to my nephew before his passing when I was 18. I also remember playing him songs I made and he would jump and was super happy and smiling. I thought if I could make him happy with everything he had going on, then I can do that with other people as well.

IMG-7220.JPG

How long have you been a musician and since you begin what are some things you’ve learned?

I’m still a new musician. I’ve been teaching myself guitar for a little time now but nothing too long yet. It’s only been about four months. I’m trying to crack down and actually focus on learning it for awhile. Since learning guitar I’ve become more patient. Honestly, with being surrounded by musicians you feed off of their love for the music and it becomes that much better. I’ve learned to love and appreciate every musician and the art of music.

Who are some of your favorite artists and how have they influenced you and your music? What are your top 5 albums as of right now?

Some of my favorite artists in no order are probably: Russ, Phora, HER, Fantasia, Vedo, J. Cole, Chris Brown, Smino, Luther Vandross, Maxwell, Usher, Rick Ross, Michael Jackson, THEY, Drake, Anthony Hamilton, Biggie, and more. Those are who I can say I listen to a lot on Spotify. Growing up listening to these, in addition to other, artists has played a huge part on my sound. Listening to how they twist words in rhymes and seeing how singers harmonize on their choruses and pre choruses. I’m still working on my craft now but hearing their example shows me ways that impact me vastly. And my favorite albums right now are 4 your eyes only by J. Cole, Chasing Summer by SiR, The Amanda Tape by THEY, PTSD by G Herbo, Fuck The World by Brent Faiyaz.

So you're based out of the south specifically Huntsville, Alabama, how has the area influenced you and your sound, and how is this area's underground scene? Is it a hub for creatives?

Yea being based on Huntsville is actually really nice. Being here in the area has influenced me to become more carefree in my music. Meeting other artists out here and seeing their different views points, sounds, hearing their mannerisms etc. You’ll see on my next few tracks for how it’s changed. The underground scene is wild out here. I don’t know too many artists out here but the ones I do know like Nicholas Lamar and Yung Steezee go crazy. The city is growing fast and this will be a fye spot to be at soon. I don’t mean for just music either; I’m talking photography, videography, and painting too. It’s gone be something over here really.

IMG-1681.JPG

Last year you released numerous songs such as ‘Mind Right’, ‘We’, ‘Silly Me’, and ‘Come Thru’. Tell us about each of these songs and what inspired them?

When I dropped “Mind Right” I was in a totally different head space than I was with “We, Silly Me, and Come Thru”. When I created “Mind Right”, with the help of Coleman, I had been going through a lot financially, mentally, and it was just a horrible time for me. The base of the song is me talking to my youngins out there. “I can feel that temptation, to gone and snatch....” I know how it feels to not know what to do and to be broke. I’m sure a lot of us do. I never had anyone tell me “get your mind right youngin, you can turn nothing to something” and believe in me.

That is what this song is. It’s just me talking to my youngins telling them I understand but you have to be strong and know that your time is coming. The process with “We, Silly Me, and Come Thru”, which is my EP “ROSES”, was completely different. I had just went through a situation and I had to get it out. “We” to me is about how I feel I want love to be. It’s really me asking someone to be mine. “Silly Me” is about a friend and my own situations. saying I thought I had you, silly me. I fell for you and put that effort but that wasn’t enough, simple as that. “Come Thru” is basically the aftermath of “we” to “silly me” then now “come thru”.

You've worked with several artists, two artists including: Jordan Barnett and Antonia Martinez. How did you find them and what made you tap them in as features?

Let me start off by correcting their names. Jordan goes by Jordan RyAnne and Antonia goes by Toni Soprano. I misspelled both of their names because of a misunderstanding on the release and I apologize for that. I met Jordan RyAnne at a group session awhile back in Antioch. She was cold at singing and I liked her delivery and swag. We clicked and was cool from the start. I had actually been trying to do something with her since that day and one day I was in the lab and thought about her. I called and she pulled through. Then “we” came about.

As far as Toni Soprano, we also met in the lab. I was told about her when I showed up to create. I heard her singing a part to a track she was recording and was actually thrown off. I loved her voice and her power behind it. We eventually met formally and kept in contact. We was both in the studio at the same time when my homies Nobody’s Home produced “Come Thru” and I just had to get her on the track.

IMG-1819.JPG

Have you worked with any other artists? And as your career grows, what artists do you hope to work with within the near future?

IMG-1442.JPG

I can’t tell you I have worked with a few more but you’ll see when they drop. I can’t spoil it for you. As far as who I wanna work with..... I’d say I wanna work with Brian Brown, 24., Nicholas Lamar, THEY, Smino, Lauren Mcclinton, and Savvy.

So 2020 is finally over. What can you say are some goals you've accomplished last year? And for 2021 what are some goals you hope to get through by the end of the year?

In 2020 I’ve accomplished staying healthy. Being able to create unapologetically. Being myself and not caring who sees. I’ve also established who I am as a man. Although, for 2021 I’m hoping to love again. Loving myself and showing love to my people, the mob, and my fans/supporters.

Shout out some friends who should we feature next on Nefarious Supply?

I wanna shoutout my guy Nicholas Lamar, Yung Steezee, Chazzoben, and Tuk

Any last words?

For my last words I’d like to say drink water and be yourself. Let go of the past and push for tomorrow.

MYMHM - That's What They All Say

2.png

Fresh off a breakout single that peaked at number 8 on the US Billboard 100, Jack Harlow has been steadily riding the waves of success and fame that have come his way. A Louisville, Kentucky native, Harlow has been in the rap game for almost 5 years now, dropping gems of smooth and stylistic artistry in the forms of chart-toppers like the grungy, yet butter smooth “WARSAW”, the sunny, head-bopping “SUNDOWN”, and of course now the recent big release, featuring Miami Heat’s number 1 rookie, “Tyler Herro

Locking in and taking his career serious he dropped his debut project “18” back in 2016 and every since then the artist has been focused on slow consistent growth. While in the modern day of how music is consumed this may hinder some artists. The formula that Harlow sticks to has been propelling his name and garnering him more attention not only from us but the rest of the world. High quality music is what he is known for and across the board on all his projects one thing that we can say confidently is that he literally never misses. No matter how the song is presented whether it’s a banger, more of a slow vibe, or even a song that really makes you sit back and think Harlow’s focuses on high quality production as well as an emphasis on lyricism is what allows him to stand out and make a name for his self in this crowded industry.

harlow album 2.jpg

That’s What They All Say is Harlow’s coming of age story. The Louisville MC reveals a sense of maturity, one that’s almost telegraphed by the people he has surrounded himself with, a closely-knit group of soldiers and advisers, a Private Garden. From open to close of the album Harlow reminds fans, and haters that his success as not instantaneous but instead was a product of his consistent work ethic, and focus over the last five years.

Favorites off the track include “Rendezvous”, a beautiful opener that showcases Jack’s slick flow and brain-tapping lyricism, adding a satisfying instrumental lead out that leaves you wanting more. And that’s where our other fave comes into play. “21C / Delta” a darker vision of Harlow’s world. He beckons a girl to come to find him at his hotel, room 21C. As the beat switches, our brains are swept back to Drake’s Take Care as Harlow flows effortlessly on Delta.

Over hits such as “Way Out” featuring Big Sean, a shining comeback artist of 2020 with the incredible “Detroit 2”, and “Already Best Friends” where Harlow partners up with Chris Brown (need we say more?) for an instant R&B classic. There are also sleepers on this cohesive tracklist, such as the introspective and reminiscent “Baxter Avenue”, the unapologetically confident and groovy “Creme”, all the way to “Route 66” which throws comeback feature, EST Gee.  All in all from beginning to end Jack Harlow has once again been able to deliver a project that will only age as the years go by. From the feature guest list to the production of project which includes house hold names like Hit-Boy, Sonny Digital, jetsonmade, and more. That’s What They All Say has added jet fuel the the already sky rocketing career of the talented artist, and as he continues to grow his career, and within the industry its self we are more than excited to see what he has to offer. All in all the album is a great vibe and exactly what we at Nefarious were waiting for from the Louisville golden boy.

Scotty Apex - Starlight

Scotty Apex what’s up bro, the last time we had you on Nefarious Supply was in 2019 when you released Lovesick 2 so we’re excited to feature you once again. To get the interview started give us an update on what you’ve been up too, and what’s new with you?

What’s good!! Yeah, it has definitely been a minute since the last album, appreciate you guys reaching out to me and acknowledging this latest release, means a lot. But yeah, there’s a lot of new things in my life since then. It was a pretty crazy year in 2020 for everyone I’m sure, it definitely was for me. In December of 2019, I graduated from college. Then in January, I moved from Indianapolis to Los Angeles. I drove all the way here, and been here in LA since. Living in LA this year has been a journey, from the pandemic, completing the album, meeting new people, it’s been like a movie.

So from the last time, we have talked to now what are some things you’ve learned about yourself, and the industry, and in learning these things have they had an influence on your overall creative process?

IMG_0355.JPG

I’ve learned a lot these past two years, and been able to make a lot of growth in many aspects of my life. I think what I’ve learned about myself most is the things I need to keep close around me, to be more direct with my words in reflection to the truth of what I’m feeling, and I guess I received a lot of reassurance from the universe that I’m on the right path with the world that I am creating for myself. As far as what I learned about the industry, there’s a lot, both positive and negative.

I think I realized that a lot is not as it seems. I was able to learn about a lot of people that I looked up to in the past, more on a personal level as to who these people really are, and unfortunately a lot of people in the industry that I came across sort ofdisappointed me. They weren’t this genuine person that I had once thought they were, and I can see how there is a lot of negative energy circulating through those circles of people, which made me want to stay far away from things I once would have dreamed of being in the room with. This definitely had an influence on my creative process, I just really want to work with people that genuinely care about me as a human being, people that I have built friendships with and truly have love for, I think the end product has been coming out a lot better that way, and it makes me more passionate about our releases knowing that it is a team of people that I really care forand am genuinely proud of.

2020 was pretty much slowed the world down but it seems like you’e able to stay focused and continue to put in a lot of work into your career. How did you stay focused during this hard time, and for artists that have a hiccup due to the pandemic what is some advice you would give them?

With the pandemic, it sort of forced people into isolation. A lot of people sort of feed off other people’s energies which I definitely understand, so with that vacancy of external validation or exposure, I can see how it is hard for people to stay inspired or focused. For me, isolation is something I have always sort of lived most of my life in, so I guess this pandemic allowed me to even indulge deeper into that way of life. I think I actually thrive in isolation more than any other circumstance. There’s no expectations, there’s no more pressure, it’s just me, my ideas, my computer, and my friends. All of my focus is now shifted on just creating the best music possible to my own ear and ability, and just becoming the best version of myself on a human level that I can. I think what helped is just having my priorities in line. I loved my family harder than I ever have before, I expressed care for my friends more than I ever have before, I just continuously tried putting out positive energy into the universe and letting it circulate back to me in time.

IMG_1574.JPG

I would suggest to anyone struggling during this weird time of life to just really focus in on loving more, as corny as that might sound, but it’s true. Just love more. Love yourself, love your family, love your friends, love your work, your art; also appreciate more, appreciate movies, appreciate songs, appreciate being able to breathe and exist, all of that appreciation for life will allow you to find the positives in a lot of negative, and when you’re thinking that way, good things come your way in time.

So let’s get into your music. You started 2021 right by releasing your newest project Starlight, and I gotta be honest you’ve raised the bar for yourself, this project is dead ass amazing! So just give us a brief background on it, what inspired it, how long have you been working on it, and what was your experience like putting it together?

Thank you for the compliment on the project, it means more to me than I can express in words. I look at all my albums as a cinematic version of my real life, they always reflect my experiences in that time period, the emotions I am feeling, the struggles, the highlights, all of my albums have that core element of my own reality. I sort of create my music in direct honesty to what I am living through, so my real life is what inspired the overall message and continuation of the story that is within my catalogue.

I started working on it just under two years ago, shortly after putting out LOVESICK 2, so sometime in 2019. It’s been a crazy journey of working on this album, and just life in general. I shed a lot of tears, created a lot of memories, learned a lot about myself and others around me, and was able to come out with the result of STARLIGHT in the end. This is just the next chapter in my catalogue, my real life story, and it reflects where I currently am in real time.

IMG_0363.JPG

If you don’t mind, walk us through the project and tell us about the meaning of each of the songs, and which ones are your overall favorites?

STARLIGHT, the intro track and title track to the album, is a song that I felt like would be the perfect introduction to the album. I thought it would be a great first impression to the world that STARLIGHT exists in, and I think it worked out to be just that. I made that one shortly after moving to LA, Lowky had sent me it and I had something down within like 20 minutes. Then after we made the track, a couple months later, I showed it to VVD and he added those additional elements that you hear on the production, like the outro. He took it to the next level, and I just knew this was the intro for the album right away. This song for me just means being positioned in this new way of life, new scenery, new feelings, new experiences, etc.

HELPLESS, is a track I wanted to be vulnerable on, but still have enough of a kick on there to keep the listener engaged and full of energy. I wrote it in a moment of emotional vulnerability, I was going through a lot, and just wanted to be brutally honest over the production in hopes someone out there would be able to relate and find comfort in the fact that I may be experiencing something similar to them. I felt helpless, it wasn’t a good feeling, I felt like I wouldn’t be able to escape, but I kept on going like the song will go to say. The meaning of this song is just that, feeling helpless, I hope this can help any listener that needed it.

CAN’T LOSE YOU, is a track that came about on a random day at the house. I came home and Mathaius had been working on a beat, he called me in his room and was like “yo I just made this and can really hear you on it”, he told me some of the melody ideas he had, and I took that, and wrote everything that night. After I finished my vocals, I told him that I needed him on the record as well, and he eventually knocked out his verse. This track is basically about a failing relationship, the feeling of fearing it ending, but recognizing the unhealthy attributes that come with it.

MISMATCH is a track that I just wanted to have fun with, and bring along some friends. I had Ejaaz and Michael Seven on there with me doing their thing, and yeah I just came up with a cool melody, filled the words in, and laid it down. The meaning of this one is just feeling like you can overcome any adversity, and aren’t afraid to showcase that to anyone who doubts you. Basically telling these internal demons that me vs you is a mismatch because I will undoubtedly win.

IMG_2085.jpg

LOST & LONELY is one of the first tracks I made from the album, almost two years ago. I was sitting in a house in Bloomington, indiana, Lucy sent me the beat through text message and was like I could hear you on this. I wrote that song in 15 minutes and laid it down later that night. At the time, I had only this song and “Smoke Away”, but I knew this was a greeting starting point for the project to really begin, and I stemmed everything else from those two songs.

ALL OF IT is a song that means I am willing to give everything that I can to this specific girl. I’m saying I am willing to let my guard down, and allow her into my space, taking my time and energy, since the first day I finished my part of the song, I left an open verse, undecided as to who would get on the project, but one day I went over to Maxx Owa’s place and thought it made perfect sense to have him on that one, he knocked out the verse in 15 minutes, and boom, a hit was born.

SMOKE AWAY is the first song I worked on from the album, almost two years ago, I went over to Mathaius’s house when we were still living in Indianapolis and made it while I was there. The meaning of this song is basically running from your internal issues, and smoking away the stress. I made this song at a time I was experiencing a lot of stress, from relationship issues, to family, friends, work, life in general, and my vice of smoking is what cured that for me.

IMG_0352.JPG

MISGUIDED is one of the last songs that I made for this project. The meaning behind this song is basically feeling lost with no sure direction as to where to go, but knowing that certain things bring emotions out of me, could be a person, a situation, etc.

WARRIOR is a track that symbolizes my want to fight through any adversity that comes from relationship issues, my willingness to try to make things work despite the disagreements, the doubts, and sort of give reassurance to a lover.

OVERNIGHT FLIGHT is a track that is me being open about missing someone far away, sort of wishing that I could fly to them overnight and see them as soon as I land.

The overall meaning of STARLIGHT is just existing in this place of uncertainty, unsure as to where I am going, where I am, only knowing where I have been. So its about me living through this grey area, just trying my best, and hoping for a better future. I just want to become all that I can be.

On Starlights guest features you tapped in an all-star cast including; Mathaius Yung, Ejaaz, Michael Seven, and Maxx Owa. How did you meet each of these artists, what made you tap them in, and what was your experience like working with each of them?

I met Mathaius in Indianapolis in 2015, I saw his name on a blog and found out he lived in the same city, I reached out to him and we’ve been working together ever since, and now currently living together in LA. I wanted to tap in with him on the album because I trust his sound a lot, believe in it, and just knew when our styles meet its always something amazing.

Ejaaz has been the homie for some years, we’re both from the same city and have been linking up for awhile now. I wanted him on the album because I love his sound, appreciate our friendship, and honestly we hadn’t made any new songs in a long time, so I had to get him on MISMATCH, and he snapped.

Michael Seven and I became really cool this year, both of us moving to LA and being around each other as much as we have, our friendship has grown a lot. It’s rare to see his vocals on records right now, and I wanted to collect that rare pokemon, and he snapped as well.

startee3.JPG

Maxx Owa has been a genuine person to me since we have met, a great friend, and just someone that I look up to on a human level of being a good person. We hadn’t made anything at the time, and I really wanted to make that happen for this. Working with each of them was organic, easy going, and absolutely amazing because they are all so talented at what they do.

You kept that allstar list going on the production end of things and worked with LOWKEYGOTHEAT, VVD, Tyrus, Bergotti, Mathaius once again, Salmon, and Kami Osha. How did you get in contact with each of these producers, what made you want to work with them, and what was your experience with them?

I like working with my friends, and they are all talented as fuck, so it was orgnanic and something I felt blessed with. Lowky and I have been in touch for some years, he is just always consistently sending me fire production, and he always has this vibe that I like to exist in, so it happens naturally with him. VVD is my boy, he snaps and can allow my vision to come to life with his abilities every single time. We just hop on facetime or Discord and he knocks out any idea I have in a single night, he’s just amazingly talented, a close friend to me, and someone I deeply believe in to get the job done every time. Tyrus is the homie as well, we’ve had a friendship for years, I wanted to make sure I had him on this album, and he always these unique bounces that create something that isn’t always made. He a rare one.

C7DB76B4-1F50-4190-8130-9F98BEE9808D.JPG

The cover art is amazing bro how did that come together, and how did you end up working with Jay to put it together?

I had this initial idea of what I wanted in my head, and got lucky enough to discover Jay Gonzeles on Twitter, who I immediately loved. I hit him in the DM’s telling him my idea, and he snapped so hard on it. It was as easy as that, been in touch since.

So as far as the project do you plan on putting out any visuals to accompany it or are you going to expand it further with a deluxe version?

Yes, sitting on a visual for “HELPLESS” that will be seen very soon. Also, shot visualizers for each song on the project that will be up in some time as well. I do have a plan for a deluxe version of the album with some special attributes, but I guess time will have to reveal that. :)

So what’s next for you in 2021 where do you want to be by the end of the year?

I’m not sure what’s next to be honest, I’m more so living presently as much as I can, which is something I haven’t always done. I want to continue pushing STARLIGHT as much as possible, with high quality additional content, in hopes I can build a bigger audience, maybe open some doors, and yeah just keep going.

Mathaius Yung - Angel Deep

AngelDeep OC 3ish (2)2.png

Mathaius it's been about a year since we last interviewed you and since that time we’ve gone through a pandemic, an election, and plenty of other things that made 2020 an interesting year. So just to get this interview started give us an update, how have you been and what have you been up to since we last caught up?

God is good through all things and I’m still here so I’m grateful despite the tough times. They helped me learn more about myself. Gotta keep going no matter what and make the most out of your situation. I’ve been staying low and just working and putting plays in motion.

AfterlightImage.JPG

What music have you been bumping as of recently and who are the top 5 artists currently in your daily rotation?

As of recently I’ve been stuck on Fuck The World. It’s one of those projects that just fits the times so accurately. Real-time music. Besides that, a lot of feel good music, some Kenny G, some reggae mixed in, some old R&B. I just need music I can be coolin too. I have so much stuff going on my brain hurts sometimes, music really mellows me out. My top 5 recently been Budgie, Che Ecru, Brent Faiyaz, Doe Boy, & Beam.

How have things been in terms of your career and networking, and what are some big goals you accomplished before 2020 ended?

I’m blessed. God just been putting me in a position to win and helping me peep what I don’t need in my life. Been blessed to have been making some dope stuff with people I admire a lot and that’s as much as I can say. Got more work to do.

So in terms of music you’ve been lowkey but busy before 2020 ended you released your new project Angel Deep. Give us a description of the project, the meaning of the title, and who or what inspired you to put it together?

Man Angel Deep is the other side of me that people haven’t got yet and its the side of me that isn’t boastful, it’s so vulnerable. I love it. I feel aligned with my purpose so much that it feels like I have angels around me. I feel like so many things should’ve stopped my journey but I’m still here to make some noise so I’m moving letting the world know where my faith stands. This is what it is.

IMG_3379.JPG

I gotta stay. I'm amazed how you’re constantly able to deliver amazing music and you continue that trend with this project. Some of my favorite songs on the project are Space Age Shit, Actors, 201 Interlude, Cloud 9, and Invested. Tell us more about each of these songs, and what are some of your favorite songs?

Man I love them songs so much bro. I’m going to let the music speak though. My favorite is Invested. I’ve always wanted to make a song like that. No drums and just a vibe man. S/o summer walker.

Not only are you a talented vocal artist, but you are also a great producer so in terms of your project how much of it did you produce yourself, and did you tap in any other producers to hell you get the project together?

Thank you foreal. I produced about 80%. I feel like my strongest skill is just my ear and knowing when something needs more or less. Everyone involved played a role and never did more than what was needed. These guys are some of the most talented people I know.

In addition to production, you also featured some talented artists including Michael Seven, Tre Capital, & WesWill. What made you want to tap these artists in for your project & more importantly how did you get those amazing background vocals from Wes Will?

Honestly it was just the timing. Me and tre have been friends but he’s never been on any of my solo projects. I tell stories and if you don’t fit into the narrative it’s not personal. That’s a good way to put it. I want all the music to be treated like movies. Same with Michael Seven, but he just knew what to say and it worked. That song was us just chilling at the crib. I wanted something that felt like a spacey strip club anthem. Wes Will just a hidden gem that I hope I helped shine some light on. The world gone know about bro soon. Just watch. Bro is so dope man voice is so soulful and just reminds me of home. We actually knew each other when we were super duper young and I switched schools. Then years later were both doing music and I’m like yo dude wtf. And just remembering each other back in the day and just both understanding what I wanted to do. It worked perfectly. We both like most of the same music.

In addition to your musical career, you also have some other ventures including your record label Angel Deep Records, your clothing line, and your sound kits. Tell us more about each of these and where can the audience go to check them out?

I’m tryna be a business man and CEO on some Jay Z shit. I respect heavy what he’s done and what Drake have done with their branding and team and aesthetic. It took years of maturing to have this vision for a company but it feels right. Right now you guys are getting the start of the music that will be released under Angel Deep, my project was the first release. I love clothes so we’ve released some merch that can be found at ANGELDEEPRECS.COM . Along with the sound kits that I have released can also be found there. I wanna just contribute some swag to the world and add to what our OGs have done before us, and just help keep the world a dope place, despite the crazy stuff that’s been happening. God bless the world man.

In terms of visuals you put out an amazing video for Space Age Shit, do you plan on putting out any more visuals for the project?

Hell yeah. Just be patient!

It’s a brand new year with a brand new fresh start so what do you have planned for 2021 and where do you want to be by the end of the year?

Words are nothing without action. Let’s keep it a surprise.

Any last words?

Stay blessed and keep ya spirits high through the bullshit out here. Fuck the world but love ya people and the ones who deserve it.

Big shoutout to Mathaius Yung for coming on and interviewing with Nefarious Supply to talk about his new project Angel Deep. If you want to stay up to date with him and his music you can find him on Soundcloud, Instagram, and Twitter.

Chris Chand - Shine

IMG_0932.JPG

With 2020 finally behind us and the new year finally here we are excited to bring to you our first interview of 2021 by featuring Toronto based artist Chris Chand. A signee to start up label Tom Boy Records, rising artist Chris Chand continues the labels trend of high quality artists who produce nothing but high quality music. An artists who’s work ethic speaks for its self Chris Chand is definitely on his way to success in the industry, and is one of the artists who should be on your radar for underground talent. Only 21-years-old the artist through his creative process is able to bend-the-boundaries of the Alternative R&B/Pop scene. From collectively captivating the Toronto streets, to rejuvenating a classic sound, the multi-talented instrumentalist has only just tasted the sample of what is to come.

Chris Chand, what's up bro! We’re excited to finally feature you on Nefarious Supply! To get the interview started tell us a little about yourself and your background? What made you want to be a musician?

Thank you for having me bro, I appreciate it! My name is Chris Chand, I’m a 21- year old multi-faceted creator and I grew up in Pickering, ON. I grew up in a musically oriented family and I feel like a lot of them had a big influence on me. My little brother Victor, my uncle Sanjay and I would have little performances in front of the family and we’d always jam with each other. My parents and grandparents actually played live shows when I was younger as well and I think being around that kind of creative energy really played a big role in me wanting to become a musician/artist.

IMG_0925.jpg

How long have you been making music? Since your debut, what are some things you have learned during your career?

I’ve been making music for about 3 years now and since my debut, I’ve learned. At the end of the day, it’s your art/work so don’t get too caught up into what other people say/think and do it for yourself first.  Shoot your shot, you never know what’s going to happen because in the 3 years that I’ve been making music, I’ve met and come across so many talented and lovely people and I don’t that would’ve happened if I was just sitting and waiting around.

What artists have influenced you, your sound, and your creative process, and which artists are your top five at the moment?

The artists that come to mind when it comes to the influence on me, my sound and my creative process and they are: Childish Gambino, Marvin Gaye, Tyler, the Creator, Steve Lacy, JMSN, Thundercat, Omar Apollo & Blood Orange

My top 5 artists at the moment are: Men I Trust, Q, Yellow Days, Brent Faiyaz and Hiatus Kaiyote

6.jpg

So you're based out of Toronto--which is a big hub for emerging artists-- so tell us about your experience in the area? As you've been growing in your career what are some skills you've picked up?

So far I can’t complain, I’d say I’ve had a good experience in the area. Collaborating and meeting new people/creatives is always fun and it’s something I’d love to keep doing. It’s unfortunate that we’re in a pandemic but it’s good that we’re able to work around it with Zoom/Facetime calls.

In my career, I feel like I’ve been getting better with the skill of networking/connecting with others. There’s definitely more for me to learn but I feel like I’ve made a lot of progress compared to 18-year old Chris. I also feel like I’m getting more comfortable when it comes to producing for others. When I first started releasing music, I always wanted to know how to make beats but I was way too anxious about it but as I got older, I would keep trying out different things that I thought sounded cool and I think it eventually worked out for the better.

\We've had both of your label mates on the platform before and it was very intriguing learning how they got signed to the company. So tell us your story: how did you and Tom Boy Records get on each other's radar and what made you sign with them?

I actually dm’d Cass who started up Tomboy Records. We both went to Durham College together and after finding out that she was behind the label and that Amaka and Elyssa were the artists she was working with, I really wanted to be a part of the roster and see what could happen. After checking out my music, Cass got back to me and gave the good news and I’ve been with Tomboy Records ever since!

2020-07-09 18.47.09.JPEG

Now getting into your music you have three solid songs out right now; ‘For Nothing’, ‘Summertime’  featuring 0 Hype,  and ‘Circles’. Tell us about each of these songs. What inspired them and how they came together?

For Nothing was something I made with a friend of mine who goes by the name of Rarely the Student. I remember Rarely sent me a beat pack with all of these crazy sounds and I was trying to write to all of them, even if whatever I was writing wasn’t good. When I got to the original beat for For Nothing, I remember hearing it and instantly vibing to what I was writing. I hit up Rarely and told him that I think I might have something. Next thing you know, we got the song recorded and dropped it as soon as we could.

Summertime was something I made with my friends 0 hype and Sachin B. It’s always a great time working on music with them because the chemistry and the energy is always right whenever we link up. We met up at Rudi’s and started chilling/listening to Kevin Abstract and throughout the night, Sachin and I would lay down instrumental layers and Rudi would be writing to whatever we had going on. At some point during the night and I forget when but I remember I started writing to the song as well. Rudi and I both recorded whatever we liked from our notes and next thing we knew, we all had a song to release for the summer and for people to enjoy.

Circles was actually something I made on a whim with my buddy Bailey. I remember I was a bit indecisive about the original idea/lyrics of the song at first but I really really wanted to make something that sounded like Arctic Monkeys and Cage the Elephant. I recorded the vocal arrangement on my phone’s voice memos and wrote the music over that. When I brought the idea to Bailey and he loved it. We ended up recording the song at his house and released it as soon as we could.

IMG_2978.JPEG

You also just dropped your newest song titled ‘Shine’ which is a vibe. Tell us about this song and what inspired this one as well?

Shine was something I started working on last year around March. I remember thinking I wanted to make something that had a lot of people on it. After listening to the Revenge of the Dreamers III project and seeing all of the talented artists on it, I was really influenced by that and wanted to atleast make a song that had a lot of talented artists on it, didn’t necessarily have to be a big project. In terms of the sound, I was actually listening to a lot of The Internet and Marvin Gaye around the time I was working on the song and I think they influenced the sound behind it in some way.

IMG_2975.jpg

You worked with a lot of people including; label mates Amaka Queentte and Elyssa Plaza to produce ‘Shine’ together and the result is AMAZING. So tell us about the creative process of putting this song together and how was the experience working with other people rather than solo?

The creative process was actually kind of a fun learning experience to go through. At first, I didn't know that I’d have this many people on the song but I knew that whatever was going to be recorded, it had to feel as live as possible and as if we were all in the studio together.

When it came to working with other artists rather than solo, I genuinely had a great time. It was my first time collaborating with all of these other artists and although we weren’t able to get into a room/the studio together, I’m glad we were still able to work from home and get the song done.

Big thank you to Elyssa, Amaka, SAAKB, Bubby, Kev, Josh & James for being a part of the song, I couldn’t have done it without you guys.

IMG_0924.jpg

So your singles are great but I would love to hear a whole project by you. Is there a chance you will be dropping one this year?

I’m actually planning on releasing a 7 song EP this year! My team and I are hoping to release sometime in April but we’ll see what happens just because I don’t wanna rush anything. In my opinion, it is close to being done but I think it just needs some final touch ups/revisions and it’ll be ready for everyone to experience.

What’s next for you in 2021 and where do you hope to be by the end of the year?

I want to be better than I was the year before. As a multifaceted creator, I wanna explore the different fields within the art industry and I wanna keep building on the skills I’ve developed throughout the years/during quarantine (music, photography, graphic design etc). Aside from that, I hope to release an EP and a short film with some friends of mine and I hope to keep growing/working on myself as an artist/person.

Copy of IMG_0927.jpg

Shout some friends out!

Not in order and also my bad if I forget to mention you, I still love you but I want to give a shout out to: Cass, Tejas, Hennigar, Emrys, Knudsen, Rudi, Sachin, Duran, Mooks & James

I also want to shout out my family because they’re hella supportive and it genuinely means a lot.

Any last words?

I wanna thank you for having me. Secondly, I hope you all have a great year, trust me we all deserve it after getting through 2020 and last but not least, give Shine a listen and let me know what you think of it:)

Eddy Benz - Sailor Mouth

Closing out the year with our last interview we reached out to Eddy Benz to catch up with him as well as to cover the release of his new project Sailor Mouth which dropped today. Based out of Louisiana Eddy Benz first got on our radar after our introduction to other creatives from the NOLA area including Lango, Jaxon, and Pharez Scott. Starting his career in his High School, Eddy Benz’s biggest influences include Young Thug, David Bowie, Chief Keef, Prince, OJ Da Juiceman and Phil Collins. Having worked with a lot of the artists in his area while building a solo career for him self Benz’s discography includes “Eddy Benz EP”, and his latest project “VOYEUR”. He continues his musical career with his new project Sailor Mouth which drops on the anniversary of VOYEUR. Really happy to close out the year with him here is our interview with NOLA artist Eddy Benz.

image_6483441 (2).JPG

Eddy Benz, it's great to catch up with you before 2020 comes to an end, so before we get into the full interview update us on how your 2020 has been, what are some goals you have been able to accomplish, and what are some of your goals going into 2021?

it’s a pleasure to speak with y’all again! My 2020 has been pretty mundane honestly. I got a bachelors degree and I’ve been focusing on music more than ever. I’ve been trying to get in tune with nature and myself as opposed to indulging in more media.

This year has been such a crazy year, with a lot of unexpected events, and a pretty unprecedented time. So with all this in mind, how have you been able to stay motivated with your career, and your music, and what are some things you have learned about yourself?

This year was completely unexpected, but easily manageable too. From a music perspective, we lost live shows. Other than that the music itself is still relevant. So I’ve been as motivated as ever to deliver new material. I’ve learned that it’s up to me to make changes in my life. Nothing is going to drastically change if I don’t will it into existence.

image_6483441 (3).JPG

For artists that haven't had such an easy time this year and who are losing their focus, what is some advice you would give them, and for newer artists looking to take their first steps, what would you tell them as well?

My advice would be that if any external occurrences are making you lose focus in your art, then you were probably not very focused to begin with. I’ve always used my disadvantages and tribulations to my advantage. For newer artists? I’d say do everything yourself. Because you can...the resources are at your disposal.

How has the underground music/creative scene been for Louisiana this past year, has there been a lot of growth, and what are some exciting things that have come out of your local scene this year?

Dude the Louisiana scene has exploded. I never thought I’d see the day that these artists come together to perform, at a DIY venue at that. It’s been incredible. Some things that I’ve seen out of the local scene is my mutual artists have been signing major label deals. Labels are finally looking at us.

So let’s get into music, what are your top t0 projects of the year, and why and which artists do you currently have in your daily rotation?

To be honest I don’t listen to much music at all. I watch a ton of films though. But as for musicians that are in my rotation? I’d say ecco2k, Rylo Rodriguez, Baby Smoove and some classic Jay-Z and Camron.

image_6483441 (4).JPG

So you've been pretty low-key this year but you're ending the year off right on the right note with the release of your newest project “Sailor Mouth”. What inspired this project, what does the title mean and how does it tie into the overall theme of the project, and how long did it take you to get this project together?

So yea I was very quiet for most of the year. But actually I conceived of the album title over a year ago. The term “sailor mouth” really just means someone that curses way too much. I think I curse way too much. I even curse in my songs just to fit the meter or rhyme scheme. So that’s where the title comes from. It probably took me about a year to come up with the concepts but it didn’t take very long to record it because I had all the concepts prepared already.

What was your creative process like putting this project together? Did it change from your usual flow with previous projects, and what was your favorite part of putting this project together?

The creative process for this album was a bit different. I free associated on this album. Which essentially means i free-styled on it lol. But it was a bit more premeditated than that. My favorite part of the album was having a hand in the mixing process. The mix of a song can give it an entirely new dimension.

image_6483441 (5).JPG

So tell us about the features on this project. What made you tap them in for this project, what was the creative process like with each of them?

To be honest, I have one feature on the project. I had a lot more in mind but narrowed it down to one. It’s not very surprising but it’s my guy Lango. He’s been on my tapes three years in a row now and his progression has been insane.

On the production end of things, what was that like, what producers did you tap in for this project, and what was the creative process like with them?

I love my producers. And a new development on this project is that I know every single producer. It’s been incredible to work with my friends on this project. Shout out to them all. Many of them were on my original EP a few years ago too.

So with this release of this new project what next for you, do you plan on releasing any visuals to coincide with it?

Tons of visuals. Tons of content. Full length movie soon?

Who should we feature next on Nefarious Supply?

ya gotta feature my videographer, Matt (shotbymattx) and my right hand man and twin brother, Connor (@Connorlauman)

Any last words

[Artist Spotlight] - Channel Tres

One of the best things about being an artist is that if you focus on creating your own unique sound and block out a lot of the noise within the already crowded industry, you can create music that sticks with your fans, and as you build your platform the audience you want will eventually come. An artist that is the embodiment of this theory is rapper/producer Sheldon Young better known as Channel Tres. Coming off the successful release of his newest project “i can't go outside" which dropped on December 11, 2020, Channel Tres continues is slowly but surely building his platform and putting out amazing music while doing so.

Although his discography is not that big, Channel Tres’ work and name within the music industry are already pretty well known-- having worked with names like Jpegmafia, Emotional Oranges, Tyler the Creator, and more. Originally based out of Southern Los Angeles, specifically the Compton and Lynwood area, Tres ignited his musician career by playing drums for his church choir. After a brief stint of moving to Tulsa Oklahoma, Channel Tres returned to LA where he caught up with August 08 and went along with him to studio sessions. These studio sessions were the start of his professional career, and during these sessions, the producer was able to begin his early work by producing beats for Wale, Duckwrth, Kehlani, and others. His real claim to fame came in 2018 after the release of his single "Controller" which quickly became a cult hit, and his success continued to climb after the release of his debut self-titled EP.

It's difficult to describe what exact genre Channel Tres’ music fits into, and for other artists that have the potential to be a bad thing but got him, it works. Undoubtedly, his music is heavily influenced by hip-hop but through his production and lyrics, he can take the traditional production sounds of hip-hop and combine them with other sounds like Detroit Techno, and R&B that form a cohesive sound and culminates into an audio experience for listeners. This experience is best showcased in 'i can't go outside'. Inspired by the cluster f*CK of 2020 Tres's latest project is a culmination of him trying to make sense of this year which was thrown off course by COVID-19, which then led to isolation and most of all the racial injustices that plagued the United States.

From beginning to end this project is nothing but a breath of fresh air but some of the stand-out tracks on the project include the upbeat banger "skate depot" and what is arguably the best collaboration of the year with Igor rapper Tyer the Creator. One thing is clear about both Tres, and his music despite everything Tres is not going to let anything derail him from his career goals, and most importantly he will continue to put out nothing but amazing music.

Meech - Barriers to Knowing

meech.jpg

Meech, a heavy-hitting lyricist of Van Buren Records, has come back and blessed VB fans with a brand new EP. Barriers to Knowing rides the high of Meech’s lyrical strengths, such as his grounded storytelling and political advocacy. With key features, weaving their own versions of the concept of the EP. From praying fervently to carrying a piece on you at all times, Meech makes his words bounce on this six-track EP, and draws you deeper into the mind of the Brockton rapper.

IMG_9345.JPG

Meech what’s up bro last we had you on was February so this is pretty cool to come full circle back to you at the very end of 2020. Give us an update on how your 2020 has been coming so far, what have you been able to accomplish?

2020 has been a challenging year, filled with blessings. To be honest, I'm still trying to figure out everything that's going on and feel this all out. Day by Day

What are some of your favorite projects this year, and what artists have been in heavy rotation?

I keep all Van Buren projects in rotation, outside of that I bump everything.
Freddie Gibbs did a lot of damage for me this year with Alfredo.

Even though 2020 has been crazy how have you been able to stay focused, and for artists that are rethinking their career path cause of this year what is some advice you would give?

Find your why & mission statement with making music, study the game tirelessly and ask for help from people who inspired you to make music in the 1st place.

IMG_9281.JPG

So let’s talk about your new project “Barriers to Knowing”, what inspired it and how does the title tie into the overall message of the project?

To keep it simple, the project sums up the distractions that have stopped me from understanding and knowing myself. Spiritually, Mentally, Physically & Musically. Just wanted to yell at all the demons & barriers that keep steering me & my belief in knowing that I'm capable of so much more than what "they" say I'm worth.

IMG_9280.JPG

How long were you working to put this project together and did you creative process change when putting this together or was it about the same?

Process definitely changed, this has been a year in the making. I had Breaking Point done in November 2019, but something was telling me to sit on it and build around this emotion.

So the whole project is solid but my favorite songs on there are Expensive Taste, Breaking Point, and Numb. Tell us more about each of these songs, and what are some of your favorite tracks on the project?

I love them all, my favorite song always changes. At the moment Dey Controlling Da Hype is the one for me cuz it applies to our everyday lies, legit can't escape that concept and it's message cuz we're living in that shit 24/7. And the project's on rap genius, description of each track on there.

IMG_9290 (1).JPG

Getting into features you featured four artists Andrew Regis, Vasant, and fellow label mates Lord Felix, and Saint Lyor. What made you want to tap them in for this project?

Andrew a swiss army knife, he's elite at everything. Vasant went crazy on the sax, no more to explain on that. And Felix & Lyor my brothers, always going to find a way to get a VB feature on all of my projects.

In addition to guest features the production is also top tier which producers did you work with for this project, and who mixed/mastered the final project?

S/O Mico Juno, AeBeats, Versus, Ricky / Tee-Watt & Andrew Regis. It would be its own article if I went into detail on the production process. My brother & VB member Rlouie mix/mastered the whole thing, we really went back and forth on ideas, did some different things with my vocals and got closer to crafting my ideal sound. Next project is where we'll keep pushing the boundaries, and figure more shit out that we haven't used yet. Can't wait.

So with the end of 2020 what are some of the goals you want to accomplish in 2021?

Keep growing my following, connect more with the people who listen to me & create a project that's better than this. Hopefully I can finally get an LP off and stop doing the EP's.

Any last words?

VB WorldWide, we violating all 2021 too. Peace & Love

To know means to be silent, utterly silent So you can hear the still, small voice within. To know means to drop the mind. When you are absolutely STILL, unmoving, nothing waivers in you, The doors open . You are part of this mysterious existence. You know it by becoming part of it, Press Play & Become part of my silence -

Dey Controlling Da Hype

The first song on the extended play, Meech comes in with an almost Playboi Carti x Pierre Bourne vibe. The Brockton artist comes in hot, spitting verses on his lack of need for advice, vibing with his brothers, and ignoring what Twitter tells him is goals in life. Meech’s main message on this track is to somehow open the listeners around them to the select few who control the wave and direct the hype. Throughout the song, Meech is warning his fans to be vigilant of the people who say they’re in your corner and end up not having your best interests at heart.

Expensive Taste

With a beautiful note progression in the back, reminiscent of the high-keys on a piano, AeBeats production on Expensive Taste makes the track 50% of what it needs to be. Meech adds the other 50% with his very introspective and personal verses on the song. Expensive Taste showcases Meech’s ability to reach into himself, confront the realities of his life romantically, essentially asking the person in question if she will stay with him, even if he can’t quell her expensive tastes.

Breaking Point

AeBeats shines once again, using a piano sample that sounds somewhat reminiscent of a Six beat on one of Logic’s projects. Meech slides on this beat, either way, showing expert lyricism and flow of the boom-bap type production. He speaks on reaching the end of his rope, mentally and emotionally with a woman, accusing her of only wanting attention from the wrong people, never learning from her mistakes, gossiping to her friends who don’t have her best interest at heart.

Breaking Point is about him arguing back and forth with his woman about how her actions are affecting him and this relationship.

Heaven’s Gates (ft. Andrew Regis & Vasant)

Heaven’s Gates is probably our favorite track out of the list. Produced by Versus, the eerie, cinematic start of the track, plus an unknown sample that replays until Meech’s verse starts, sets the stage for the rest of the track. The production also sounds melancholy in a way, sad that it was conceptualized, yet doing a beautiful job nonetheless.

Meech thrives on this track as he deals with the issues surrounding his journey to becoming a mainstream artist, and Regis comes in with a hard-hitting, head-nodding verse about the struggles of growing up in a system made to hinder your progress. Vasant’s final vocal run wraps a neat little bow and the beautiful track and adds to its overall importance.

Sprained Wrist (ft. Lord Felix & SAINT LYOR)

A Van Buren Boys are back on Sprained Wrist! Featuring fellow label artists, Ricky Felix, Lord Felix, and SAINT LYOR, Meech seems as if he’s in the comfort of his own home in this vibe-filled track. Showcasing Meech’s versatility, he speaks about fighting through the pain, working till he’s numb, and even being down when he’s up. Regardless he’s going to make big bank, cop a whip, with a big frame.

Lord Felix drops a future-focused verse about blocking out his haters, and calling out the fake friends who pretend to be in his corner, as well as thriving to be the best in the game. Lord Felix’s contemporary finishes with a heartbroken bridge that ties the track together nicely. Yet another great set of features.

Numb

Numb is the longest song on the album, standing at around 4 minutes. Meech starts by diving headfirst into his verse, spitting on various topics that have plagued him throughout the length of this project, reminiscing and looking towards the future, while being cautious of both, Meech reels in the message of this EP, which we think is simply another collection of thought processes and experiences the Brockton artist decided to expand on, and tell from his point of view, with the help of a few good friends.

From the middle to the end of the track a beautiful lead out, consisting of Meech’s R&B-esque croons, and a gorgeous guitar play session towards the end, and the lovely painting is finished, the end to Barriers to Knowing.

Where or what are you representing with your music? What concepts and themes drive the foundational aspects of the creation of your sound? Why are these concepts and themes, if any, so important to you?

Wow so for me I’m trying to represent Colors if that makes sense, see colors are like feelings or emotions one day you feel blue the next day you feel orange but that’s the main thing i wanna represent with my music, The everyday struggles with dealing with emotions and colors. Expressing yourself is so important to me like finding a music.

What keeps your current audience listening and why should people start listening if they haven’t already? What parts of you as an artist do you feel are most attractive to your audience? Is it your lyrical ability? Flow? Your style? Or maybe a conglomerate of those things?

I think it’s a mix of everything people just love my style of music I’m very laid-back and chill and the way i go about things musically and outside of music people naturally gravitate towards me because I’m relatable you look at my Instagram feed it’s just me living life riding my bike around the city or eating different food’s, I don’t talk about crazy flex’s or f**king supermodels I’m just a normal guy who plays video games and that speaks about being in or out of love I think most people can find comfort in that like “wow this guy isn’t trying to do too much or be something he’s not”

How would you describe your music to someone who’s never heard it before, without using words that have to do with music?

I’d say it’s chill, melancholic and ambient like I’m saying some sad stuff but in a very chill way....with my sounds i feel like you can relax and just vibe out to it zone out for an hour and come back

6169EB7C-D781-4A2D-B04C-40FFB2DC8439.jpeg

Who inspires you for your sound? Who were the main influences in your life that helped you along the way or maybe even said something in a book or tv show one time that inspired you?

It’s definitely a few I’d like to say sound wise but Frank Ocean and The Weeknd, Both of those guys really got me into music like just the way they interact with sounds is just amazing and the lyricism from both of those guys especially Frank he just puts you in a whole different world but other than that I’d say Donald Glover inspires me lifestyle wise I’m really into Film and cinematography so one day I’d like to disappear from music and just make movies and TV shows for a while

Who do you listen to on a regular basis? Who are the go-to artists that really strike your creative nerve, or are simply your favorite artists to sit back and vibe too?

583017CA-BE56-493F-8EBF-F830B8C58E3E.jpeg

I listen to everything I don’t have a favorite genre I think music is becoming genre-less anyway but I love 80’s pop music especially the stuff they were making in Japan in really good stuff but right now I’m really into electrical sounds and things like that so right now so I’ve been bumping Vegyn, Duval Timothy and other instrumental artist

Walk us through the steps the group takes to create a track. What is your creative process? Do you guys happen to just walk into the studio and throw some beats on until one sticks? Or is there a more delicate process involved?

For me I have to go through something or hear something really dope to even get inspired but when I am inspired the process can be quick or long depending on if I’m producing the track myself or not and I don’t write I usually let words come to me while I’m on the mic so if I’m really feeling it the words and flow come right away but if I’m not feeling it I’ll just sit for a while and think until i get tired and start over the next day

Shalom Dubas - Deep Blue

Artist Photo.JPG

Shalom first things first thank you for coming on Nefarious Supply, to get the interview started introduce yourself to the audience who is Shalom Dubas and what made you choose the career as a musician?

Hey Nefarious! Very glad to be here. My name’s Shalom Dubas. I’m a contemporary RnB (rap and afro-fusion influenced) musician who’s based in the D.M.V (D.C. Metro) area. I’ve been listening to music since I was a kid. Started out writing songs and rapping in middle school, by college I was playing guitar and singing at open mics, and now I’m a musician who writes, records, and mixes tracks from my bedroom and shares them to the world.

Shalom Artist Photo Striped 4.JPG

How long have you been making music, what artists are some of your biggest influences, and what five artists do you currently have in rotation?

I’ve been making music for about 10 years now, but I released my first commercial song 4 years ago in 2016. Rap was my first outlet, and then after that I started writing dub songs - adding new lyrics to old melodies - in middle school. Some of my biggest influences are 2Face, Ed Sheeran, Lauryn Hill, Kanye West, Drake, and Sade. I’ve been listening to a lot of Afro-fusion and music from African (Nigerian) artists recently. So 5 artists I currently have in rotation are - Asa (pronounced - Ah-sha), Toyin Ores, Dami Oniru, Tems, and Shalom Dubas lol

Where are you from, how has this area influenced you and your music, and how is the area for underground and emerging musicians?

I’m from a number of places to be honest, but for the short trip: I grew up in Florida and Lagos, Nigeria. Lagos influenced/influences my music heavily because I would listen to radio a lot and that’s when I got hooked on Nigerian artists like 2Face, Timaya, Wande Coal, Asa, and US Top 40 artists like Kanye, Lil Wayne, Beyonce, etc.

Florida’s influence on my music was more so Jazz from NPR, slang, voicings, and increasing my confidence as a live performer - that was where I played my first open mics.

In Lagos, artists are very talented, but they have to break through a lot of noise - social and political - to create and share their art freely. In D.C where I live there’s a myriad of artists so you can find almost anything - Afrofusion, Hip Hop, Rap, Jazz, Gogo, - you name it. So I believe that both places are influential for emerging musicians because emerging musicians are very talented at making the best of their surroundings and situations.

Shalom Artist Photo Striped 2.JPG

Since your start as a musician what are some things that you have learned and if you could give your younger self some advice what would it be?

To be honest I’m actually pretty grateful for the trajectory I’ve had so far. When I was younger, I thought I wanted to just “pop off” and be famous for making music. But when you’re younger, it’s easy to think that “blowing up” is your key to everything you want in life. But it’s far from it and I’m grateful to God that I can be of that mindset now. So if I was to say anything to my younger self it would be “ sup little Lomie, trust the process, and trust God. He’s working for your good. “

So let’s get into your music. Walk us through your creative process from start to finish and is there a certain environment you have to create before you get started?

My creative process can vary, but the constant is that I’m a bedroom studio rat. I live life or I assess myself from the life I’ve lived, and then I get into a period where I’m making the music and that’s all I’m doing for that period of time. Once I get into the mindset that I’m working on a project it becomes a very immersive thing. I almost always know what I’m going for before I get to the end, but I never know all the things that will get added until it’s final. So I know the foundation, but the actual building and rooms in the house are like a big reveal to me on the opening day. Oh - and then when I can listen to the EP in full while playing FIFA or NBA, then I know it’s at a solid point. *laughs*

A couple of months back you released your project EP. Tell us more about what inspired it?

I released ~ Mint, Green. ~ in May 2020, after about 2 months of being in lock down. For me it was a way to start describing feelings as colors. So with ~ Mint, Green. ~ I was exploring the idea of being aware of youth, the greenness and freshness of it, and contrasting it with how fleeting said youth can be. The main inspiration was to make something of the lockdown time. To make something concrete from all the uncertainty that was whirling around in the air at that time. What came forth was Mint, Green.

What are some of your favorite tracks off of ~ Mint, Green. ~ ?

My favorite track is See Me Now, that’s literally me in song form - Bouncy Afro Infused beat, witty & rhythmic lyrics, and a slightly misunderstood vocal layer on the track (gifted from an artist named July Drama) - and it’s a major jam that usually gets overlooked lol. So yeah, See Me Now and then One (For the $) are my favorite tracks.

Your new project Deep Blue just dropped yesterday which is pretty exciting so tell us more about this project and what it means to you, and what your favorite tracks are?

Yeah! Very exciting. The best part has been seeing how my fans have received it. It’s crazy because when I had it in the vault I knew it was a special one. But to have it out there and see other people respond affirmatively is a special kind of feeling.

“Deep, Blue” to me means growth and receiving the gift of self-awareness. I can be very self-aware but this year has afforded me the time to be self-assessing. Which, I believe, is the “gift receiving” part of self-awareness; looking at yourself and your actions over periods of time and then rating your present, accepting your past (granting kindness to the truth of where you’ve come from), and then making moves that will guide you to a better future. So yeah, my favorite tracks are Mind Over Matter (You’re Telling Me) and What We Said. (feat. Tim Lyre) and then the EP as a whole to be honest lol - no cap.

So with 2020 about to be over, what’s next for you? What are some of your big goals in 2021?

I’m grateful to be wrapping 2020 and to be doing it by dropping this EP. I’m grateful for my health and sound mind, and for the health and sound mind of my family and friends. I’m very grateful to be able to say these words in a time like this and I’m grateful to God for the future that’s ahead.

In 2021, I want to perform on colorsxstudios, I want to see my music take off in a healthy way. I want to become fully financially independent from my music but have a job that allows me to be an asset to the music/entertainment industry, and I want to have values that enable me to bring value to the lives that God has placed/places in my path and circle.

Aka I’m tryna pop off, rack up, stay blessed, and coastttt.

Any last words?

Listen to Deep, Blue!

Share my music with your friends & fam, MERCH COMING SOON! (shalomdubas.com is THE plug)

Mayal - This Isn't Real

THE OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO FOR THE SINGLE "THIS ISN'T REAL"FEATURED FROM THE UPCOMING EP "NOCTURNAL"DIRECTED AND EDITING BY IgnjaticStudiosSONG AVAILABLE:Linkt...

This Isn’t Real by Mayal relseases today, so make sure you don’t miss out! For those of you hearing about Mayal for the first time, here is the run down. Mayal, is a 25 year old musical artist from Calgary, Alberta. His inspirations stem from artists like Travis Scott, Tory Lanez, Drake, Aries, Kanye, and Russel, and started making beats when he was 13 on FruityLoops. While his face is well known to some in the scene here in Calgary, his upcoming work will be the first of many to come from this up and coming artist. This song has been in production since last November and has been crafted into something truly awesome to listen to. In November of 2018, Mayal was in a library and heard a homeless man speaking about “Spooky action in the distance” so he wrote it in his notes because it sounded like a cool line. Then a year later, he used it as an intro to the record. The song is about life moving fast and shit not seeming real because you can’t catch up to the things happening. The beat was produced by Nxire, a Youtube producer Mayal found while looking for beats. His style is very cinematic, and his beats are very complex in terms of sound. This Isn’t Real is available on all streaming platforms now!

Serena Isioma - The Leo Sun Sets

leo.jpg

Serena Isioma has had an incredible year, from releasing her Sensitive EP earlier in March, which housed hit single, “Sensitive”, which now has over 120,000 views on Youtube and over 3 million streams on Spotify! Her eclectic, dreamy, and widely creative sound has propelled her to new heights, and as she continued to invite listeners into her world, with hit singles such as “Blue Sky”, “KING”, and “Stop Calling the Police On Me”, her fan-base only expanded every more so.

After having teased fans with a potential new project earlier this fall, Serena blessed us all with The Leo Sun Sets just this past week! Featuring the three breakout singles leading up to it, Serena gives her listeners what they’ve been wanting, their favorite artist under many different lenses, and Isioma delivered.

Check out our review and interview with Serena Isioma for The Leo Sun Sets below! 😈

King (ft. Saint Lewis)

King is the second single to be released from the EP, and is the first track of the project. King finds IIsioma at war with herself and with others, the song simultaneously acting as a big middle finger to any of her haters and a cry for help. The sultry, yet grungy sound Isioma has fostered over her career seems to come to a head in this project, King, especially being a beautiful reminder of that.

With an infectious beat pattern, layered over by guitar and bass progressions beautifully craft the canvas for Isioma to paint her feelings on. She also makes some allusions to the Leo astrological sign, as well as the characteristics associated with it.

I Don’t Wanna Go (w/ Mavi)

I Don’t Wanna Go does what many other of Isioma’s tracks does, it takes you for a journey. Engineered by upcoming producer, Frankie Scoca, one of the few songs without go-to producer Saint Lewis’ signature touch, Serena easily coasts along the vibe set by the spacey and sad-synth production, and explores her struggles with anxiety as Mavi comes in for an even more introspective and thought-provoking verse.

Blue Sky

Blue Sky is probably the second-most hype track on The Leo Sun Sets, and was the first single to drop from the project. The song is filled to the brim with vibes, as the Saint Lewis driven production steers her down the experimental and kaleidoscopic path as she leads her listeners into a discussion over hypersexuality, especially as you’re under the influence.

Serena is one to mix contemporary singing with grimy trap lyrics sprinkled in the mix, a truly weird and healthy mix that adds to the verdancy of her sound.

Why Am I So Toxic

Why Am I So Toxic is probably the most self-explanatory song on the tracklist. Serena goes into detail trying to understand why she delves into toxic tendencies in relationships and reminiscing on various scenarios explaining her experiences. This track is groovy and keeps you well entertained, not only with Serena’s storytelling, but also Saint Lewis's beautiful production, wrapping her vocals up in a cozy blanket.

Meadows in Japan

Meadows in Japan is the slowest and probably one of the most beautiful pieces of music we’ve heard from Serena this year. Meadows in Japan is about the artist’s journey towards becoming a better person. On a vocal snippet towards the end of the track, Serena explains to a soon-to-be ex-lover that she cannot be their world anymore and that it’s her fault for thinking that this time would be different. It seems as though this track is Serena breaking through a phase of dependency, and striking out on her own. Meadows in Japan is also noted to be Isioma’s favorite track on the EP!

I Feel Fantastic

I Feel Fantastic is arguably the most anthemic track on The Leo Sun Sets, and we say arguably due to the existence of King, I Don’t Wanna Go, Why Am I So Toxic, and frankly every single other track on this EP. However, what makes I Feel Fantastic stand out among its peers is the juxtaposition behind it. Something of a self-motivator, Serena screams “Get up get out your feelings” at the listener, however, this could also be interpreted as her speaking to herself.

Isioma stated that this song is actually about her feeling the exact opposite of fantastic and that she made this track in order to try and navigate through her rough patches and be happy.

Stop Calling The Police On Me

Stop Calling The Police On Me, unlike Why Am I So Toxic, is not as clear-cut as its title makes it out to be. The track was produced by the very talented Mei and though its meaning could be doubled in also being geared towards the police especially considering today’s political landscape. However, after one listen, you understand that this song is much more than that.

It’s not just the police that need to stop bothering her, but Isioma has a problem with any authority figure in the way of her happiness. This track solidifies her feelings on the fact that she will not bend for anyone or anything, prideful and confident, like the Leo she is.

Serena it’s been a while since we had you on so just to get the interview started give us an update on what’s new with you, and how your 2020 has been so far?

I wont lie, it’s been pretty hectic but overall pretty good. I’ve been working a lot.

IMG_3527.JPG

Since the year is coming to an end, what are your top 5 albums for the year and which 5 artists do you currently have in your rotation?

Geez. Okay so top 5 albums/artists in my rotation are Eternal Atake (Deluxe) by Lil Uzi Vert, The Breakfast Club by POORSTACY, Weird by Yungblud, Savage Mode II by 21 Savage & Metro Boomin, and Good News by Meg Thee Stallion.

So this year has been kind of a mess between the pandemic and the elections but you’ve been able to stay focused and turn what may have been a negative situation into a positive, so what kind of advice would you give to a newer artists who have struggled this year?

Remember that the internet is your friend.

IMG_3530.JPG

In addition to newer artists if you could go back about a year or two years ago what is some advice you would give to your younger self?

Keep doing what you’re doing.

So let’s talk music, it’s safe to say that this year has been extremely successful for you and your career especially with the drop of your newest project “The Leo Sun Sets” tell us about this project, what inspired it, and what was your favorite aspect of putting this project together?

The Leo Sun Sets is about mostly about learning how to accept myself. Each song was sparked by real events going on in my life.

My favorite part of putting this project together was being able to work with my friends on a bigger scale. It was so much fun to make.

Walk us through each of the songs and what they mean to you and tell us about who helped you on the production end with the project?

  • “King” is pretty much me saying fuck you but also please love me. My guy Saint Lewis’s production is on that track so much i had to put his name on it.

  • “I Don’t Wanna Go” is mostly about anxiety. Mavi hopped on a verse and Frankie Scoca produced it.

  • “Blue Sky” is honestly about hyper sexuality. Again, Saint Lewis produced that one.

  • “Why Am I So Toxic” is pretty much self explanatory. It was really a revelation of how toxic I had been in my past relationships.

  • “Meadows in Japan” is about me wanting to be a better person.

  • “I Feel Fantastic” is actually about me feeling the opposite of fantastic. I was going through a lot so I thought maybe if I make a happy song then I’ll be more happy.

  • “Stop Calling The Police On Me” is a very honest song about not wanting to be bothered by authority. Just let me have fun. Mei produced that one he’s very talented.

What are some of your favorite tracks The Leo Sun Sets and why?

“Meadows in Japan forsure. Lyrically and sonically it just hits you right in your chest.

So in addition to dropping an amazing project you’re also dropping some merch called “Isi’s Tree”,tell us more about it?

YES. So I got together with my boys at Strafford to drop a limited line of button downs. The pieces are meant to be worn in any environment for any vibe. Each piece from this collection was left behind to never be worn again until being reworked for fans to appreciate. The music and fashion collide with a similar story of evolution.

So with the year about to be over what’s next for you where do you want to be at the end of 2021?

I want to be everywhere.

Any last words?

Go cop my merch!

Savvy - Nashville's Finest

Hey Savvy thank you for reaching out and submitting your music you Nefarious Supply! To get this interview started introduce yourself, who is Savvy and what got you started as a musician.

Yo , I am Savvy from Nashville Tennessee. Originally from Riverside California, by way of Huntsville Alabama I’m a 20 year old new artist. The thing that really got me started with music was moving to Nashville and just seeing the budding music scene and seeing opportunity. After that the spark was lit in me and I just started doing it honestly.

IMG_5157.JPG

Where are you from and how has this area had an influence on your, as well as your music?

I was born in Riverside , California but spent most of my years in Huntsville also, so in both cities there isn't really a major music scene or creative scene honestly. So I kinda found my identity in other artists who were rising around that time I started listening to rap music. But I feel like being in Huntsville for sure played a major role in me wanting to come to Nashville and chase my dreams. It fueled me to kind of bring something back to the city in a sense.

In addition to influencing you, how is the area for underground talent? Is it a creative hub or is it still emerging?

Nashville is a hub for anything creative right now. Whether you want to do music, art, fashion, dance, there's pretty much a scene for that and to be a part of all that is just so beautiful. It's honestly like a gold mine right now .

What artists would you say have had the biggest influence on you and your music, what artists and albums are currently in your rotation, and who is your favorite artist right now?

The artist that has had the most impact on me and my music would probably have to be Tyler the Creator. It was through his music that I was able to kind of find myself and what I identified with creatively. Artists that are in my rotation right now are probably Emmavie, Sade, Bari , Smino just to name a few. As for albums i don't usually listen to albums in full although recently i've been playing Solange’s “When i get Home” alot. I love that album. And my favorite artist would probably have to be either Smino , Tyler or Drake for obvious reasons.

Describe your experience so far as an underground artist. What are some things you have learned since you started, and for a new artist that is just starting their career what advice would you give?

Honestly one of the biggest things I’ve learned is being an artist is all a science , it's all a formula. Everything’s gotta be balanced. The advice I'd give to someone who's just starting out or who wants to start out is to be consistent. If you handle your business and continue to do what you know you're good at then the opportunities will present themselves and you'll be so used to doing what you do that seizing this opportunity will be a piece of cake. Always apply pressure.

Walk us through you creative process, and how do you know when a song is ready and you want to share it with your fans?

I'll say that my creative process is always different . It kind of goes back to that science i was talking about , there's always more than one way to get a solution so it's kind of the same when it comes to songwriting. I'll try different methods and i'll always know when it's right or when it's time to work on it a little more. As far as knowing when to release , there's like a core five people whose opinions and thoughts I actually take into account when creating so usually I'll play the track or whatever it is for them and if they all give the approval then I'll go ahead and release it.

So let’s talk about your discography right now you have two projects out “trash-soul” which came out in 2017, and ‘teenage fever” which came out 2018. Tell us about both projects, what inspired them, and what team did you work with to put the projects together?

So for those projects I normally don't shine a lot of light to them because I made both of those in highschool before I had an honest passion for being an artist and making music. Around that time I only did it because i was able to make music and make my own beats, so for both of those projects I produced and wrote all those songs myself. Trash Soul i recorded on a crappy mic/software in my parents dining room and for teenage fever i recorded in one of my big homies studios and Erik Cain did all the mixing and engineering for that one.

In addition to your projects, this year alone you’ve released three songs including; “Snl”, “Bag/Purse” with Mike Floss, and your newest release Zoom. Tell us about each of these song?

I like to look at all of these releases as like a foreword to the whole story. So each of these songs means alot to me and that is because I'm able to see the growth in time between each release. I’ve had a lot of fun making these records and am in pure joy that people love and enjoy these early looks at who “$avvy” is.

2020 has been a wild year for everyone so what are some goals you’ve accomplished this past year, and going into 2021 what do you hope to accomplish next year?

So some goals that I accomplished this year are performing back in Huntsville , modeling for brands outside of Tennessee and even the US, collaborating more, and cracking 35,000 streams on a song. For the next year I have a lot of crazy ideas and things that are in the works right now that I cannot wait to show you guys. The big announcement is that i am currently working on an album that is set to release February of 2021.

Who should we interview next for Nefarious Supply?

I think you guys should interview @hipsterscantswim next!

Elyssa Plaza - Is it Really Love

PJR_5000.jpg

Elyssa Plaza first things first thank you for interviewing with Nefarious Supply, to get the interview started tell us about yourself and what made you choose the career path of music?

I am an R&B/Alternative singer/songwriter from Scarborough, Ontario and I’m currently in school at the University of Toronto. Growing up I would always be singing. Throughout elementary school, I would see so many artists being discovered on Youtube, and seeing that inspired me to keep going with singing and getting myself out there. By high school, I would be performing at coffee shops, school talent shows, and school choirs, it was always something I enjoyed doing. By then I knew singing was something I wanted to continue in the future, however, I was too scared to solely focus on music after I graduated high school. After I graduated high school, I went to the University of Toronto to study Math, Religion, and Statistics. Throughout my time in university, I realized pursuing music is something I would want to continue in the future. So during my time in university, I would be writing songs and working towards releasing new music. Growing up, singing was something I enjoyed doing, and by the time I got into high school and university I knew it was something I was very passionate about and something I wanted to focus on in the long-term.

How long have you been making and since your start what are some things you have learned?

I started making music probably back in 2018. 2018 was when I started writing songs and by 2019 I released my first single “Getting Over You”. Something I learned that stood out to me the most is being patient. There were times I was frustrated with myself that I wasn’t able to reach specific dates of when I wanted to get things done musically, but at the end of the day, I realized there’s so much time and there's no need to feel pressured. I learned that taking your time can get things done properly and carefully instead of it being rushed.

Where are you from and how would you say this area has influenced you, and your sound?

I’m from Scarborough, Ontario, and being able to see the Toronto local music scene is very inspiring. So many unique voices and amazing talent! It is inspiring to see Toronto artists grow and making it bigger into the music scene because it is something I strive to do as well. The Toronto music scene has inspired me to be myself and experiment with my sound.

In addition to you influencing your sound, how is the area for creatives would you say it is still an emerging area or a hub, and have you worked with any artists from the area?

I feel like Toronto is still an emerging hub. There are so many amazing talents I have to see that go unnoticed and I feel like there should be more recognition for the talented artists in Toronto. I haven’t worked with other singers yet but I have worked with many great producers in Toronto.

Who are some of your favorite artists that you grew up listening to and as of right now what are the 5 albums and artists you currently have in your rotation?

My favorite artists I grew up listening to would be Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, and Beyonce. As of right now, the artists I have on rotation would be Snoh Alegra, Giveon, Frank Ocean, Lee Fields & The Expressions, and The Beegees.

So right now you’re currently with the startup Tomboy Records which is pretty cool, how did you  meet them and what led to you formally signing to them?

I met Tomboy Records through social media. Casandra reached out to me on Instagram and told me about Tomboy Records. I was busy with school at the time so by the summer I gave it some thought and decided to sign with them. It was the greatest decision made! I decided to sign with them because I knew we both had similar end goals. With our similar ambitions, I knew that we would both work hard to achieve them.

PJR_5302.jpg

So let’s get into your music. You just recently released your new song “Is It Really Love” tell us about this new song,  and what inspired it?

I started working on the production on "Is It Really Love" back in March/April. This song has been something I had for probably about 2 years and was never released. When I first wrote it, I wrote it based on my family experiences and the misinterpretations of love language. From my experiences, this song questions if these actions are supposed to express love or if it's toxic. It took me some time to release it because it was something pretty personal. I also wanted the production to do the song justice and I never really knew what I wanted. I’ve only played this song live twice and it’s been with a live band. This year I finally decided to work on the production of the song and I’m very happy with how it turned out.

Last year you also released a Small EP titled EP, tell us about this project, what inspired it, and who are some of the people that helped you put it together in production?

This project was very fun to make. This was inspired by my personal experiences, specifically my experience with relationships, how I felt in the moment, and the way I dealt with things. "Forever", is probably one of my favorites from the album. High Rize Beatz helped put the production together along with mixing/mastering.

So going into 2021 what are some things you want to accomplish before the end of 2020, and what are some of your biggest goals in 2021?

Releasing “Is it Really Love” was a big accomplishment for 2020. By 2021, I plan on releasing more music and hopefully perform (whether it be in person or online)!

Any last words?

Thanks so much for having me!

[Artist Radar] - Lou Phelps

IMG_7540.jpg

As a platform dedicated to music and artists, our biggest job at Nefarious Supply is keeping an ear locked to the music industry and paying attention to all of the new music coming out week by week. As well as sifting through and finding new and emerging artists to showcase and network with on the platform. And while the job is extremely fun one of the hardest things about it is keeping up with the sheer volume of new music releases as well as new artists that are coming literally everyday so unfortunately, we don’t get a chance to cover everything. With that being said though 2020 was a shitty year low-key with everything else BUT the music that came out this year was some of the best I’ve heard we have heard in a minute. And with this music being the sounds of the start of a new decade we’re pretty excited for what’s to come shortly. With that being said welcome to the first episode of Artist Radar the goal of this is to showcase an artist we feel is extremely underrated especially with the caliber of music they are sharing. Starting us off right let’s take a look at an artist who recently got on our radar Lou Phelps who in our opinion dropped one of the best/understated projects of the year!

IMG_7537.jpg

If you haven’t heard of Lou Phelps don’t kick yourself in the butt because, to be honest, I had no idea who he was either but if you know who Kaytranada then you are already on the path of learning about the talented artist. Kaytranada’s actual brother Lou Phelps first began his career as Louie P by pairing up with his brother to form the hip-hop duo The Celestics. The two later released their debut project Massively Massive independently in 2011 which built steam and traction. An in May 2014 they went on to release another project titled Supreme Laziness which featured guest appearances from GoldLInk, Dudley Doo, Nana Zen, Costa Joe & ST. Following the release of the project, the artist still worked together but started to build separate brands for themselves selves with Kaytranada releasing his first studio album 99.9% in 2016, and Lou Phelps release his first studio project 001: Experiments in 2017 all of which was produced by Kaytranada.

Following that release both brothers pretty much were locked into their career with Kaytranada focusing on the production side of music and Lou Phelps pushing his self further as an MC. After the release of his first studio project, the talented rapper then went on to release several singles including; Come Inside, Want To (For The Youth), and Miss Phatty. All three of which were a run-up to his sophomore studio release 002/LOVE ME. An even better project 002/LOVE Lou Phelps tapped in with his brother again who serves as executive producer on the project and features guest appearances from Jazz Cartier, JAHKOY, Planet Giza, and Pony. The thing about Lou Phelps is that you can tell that he takes his time with his music, and his craft and career very seriously. Even with his debut solo project Lou’s sound as well lyricism is something that sets him apart from his peers.

Music video for "Word" performed by Lou PhelpsProduced by WondaGurl Video directed by Igal Perets

After the release of 002/LOVE Lou stayed pretty low-key and dropped one Single in 2019 titled word. which featured production from WONDAGIRL, and is accompanied by an Igal Perets directed the video. A stand-out song with amazing lyrics the video is what really makes the single stand out. Paying homage to pioneers of the industry the video features classic hip-hop video settings and has Lou posing as the stand-in for some of the high caliber project album artwork. The song and video tie everything together and are the quality work that is helping Lou Stand Apart from his peers.

IMG_7536.jpg

Going into 2020 Lou Phelps raised his caliber again with the release of his third studio album “Extra, Extra!”. This project is one of the most underrated bodies of work for the year. Starting promotion for the project with the release of his single Nike Shoe Box the single gained a lot of traction and following that Lou Phelps formally released the project. A solo album with no guest features Lou Phelps's latest project features production from Kaytranada, LAKIM, Jasper, and ten. lun, and this is his best project to date. Counting in at only 7 tracks Extra, Extra! offers Lou Phelps's point of view on how it feels to join the world of the rich and famous. Some of the best songs on the project include; Party in LA, Smiling, and New Friends. But the whole project is a must listen to especially if you enjoy this caliber of music. Check out Lou Phelps you can follow him on Instagram and be sure to check out his newest project Extra, Extra! which is available on all streaming platforms now!

[MYMHM 4] - Aminé - Limbo

Aminé, having taken time to ride the wave of his 2018 project, ONEPOINTFIVE, with critical hits such as REEL IT IN and BLACKJACK, comes back harder than ever, and with more maturity and expertise to complement the confidence, smooth flow, and playful production that’s made Aminé the accomplished artist he is today.

Amine describes Limbo in similar fashion to his previous project, as a “sophmore-ish” album, filled with his hopes, fears, and experiences during what he also denotes as something of a “quarter-life crisis”.

Check out our five favorite tracks from this amazing project! 😈

Woodlawn

Woodlawn is the first track on the album and immediately captured our eyes with Aminé’s signature energy, riding the wave of the flute-led production with precision and lyrical creativity. In the song, the Portland artist reminisces about the times back in his neighborhood of Woodlawn. He also extends a shout out to Kobe Bryant, one of the world’s best basketball players, as well as a role model to many, including Aminé himself. Woodlawn is also dedicated to a recently incarcerated friend, according to Aminé, and he used the chorus of this track to detail his first time playing the song for his friend, who is seemingly named “Marc”.

Roots (ft. JID & Charlie Wilson)

Roots is the second track on the album and Aminé’s taps into his Turf and Dakota partner in crime, Charlie Wilson. The two decide to team up with Dreamville heavyweight, JID who delves masterfully into the conceptual aspect of this track’s theme, exploring the roots of these artists’ heritage. Roots is soon seen as an obvious juxtaposition of the literal definition of plant, though the “rooted” meanings of the track stay true, and the slow, yet deliberate production create a beautiful world for the three to thrive in.

Compensating (ft. Young Thug)

Compensating is the sixth track of the album and keeps the contemporary smooth, yet bouncy vibes of Can’t Decide, the latin-inspired track prior. The song finds both Aminé and Young Thug in endless pining over their past lovers. Whatever pushed these prior relationships to fail holds deep with these two artists, who are trying to find a way to “compensate” for their past shortcomings, while admitting their guilt and responsibilities in the matter. The song is upbeat and light-hearted and Amine and Thug dance up and down the T-Minus-led production.

Becky

Becky is a slow and introspective track speaking on topics like racism and the prejudices of dating a Caucasian woman as an African-American in America. This doesn’t just stem from the issues outside of his relationship, with his entourage discouraging him and looking down on him, or he friends throwing racist chiding remarks his way because of said relationship, but also the fact that he cannot relate to her on a personal level because she doesn’t know why she likes him in the first place. At the end of the track, Aminé decides the whole thing just isn’t worth a risk.

Fetus (ft. Injury Reserve)

Fetus is probably the deepest track on the album, featuring Injury Reserve, including the late Groggs, who passed earlier this year. Aminé and crew created a song for their future children, laying out their hopes and dreams, but also their fears of coming into parenthood, like how Amine is hoping his baby doesn’t inherit his father’s cholesterol, or Ritchie wondering if he could be even half of the father that Kobe Bryant “The Mamba”, was.

This is noted to be the first track to be released since the passing of Groggs.

Augxst - Moonboy

IMG_4207.PNG

Augsxt thank you for reaching out to be interviewed on Nefarious Supply, let’s start this interview by having you introduce your self to the audience, who is Augxst and what got you into making music?

Augxst is everything that I would say I’m not really in reality. I’m really a quiet person kind of reserved but I built this kind of altar ego for myself. Someone that’s confident and isn’t afraid to say what other people are thinking.

B748EF3F-5C89-4602-802A-0E04CBCA1302.jpg

Where are you from and how has this area played an influence on you and your music, and how is the music scene for up and coming musicians?

I’m from Boston, Massachusetts to be specific. I can’t really say my music is based off an area that I’m from. It’s more based on who I am as a person and how I feel or what I’m going through at the time. I kind of feed off of the energy of myself and it tends to come out in a variety of different forms.

It’s safe to say that 2020 has been a wild time for pretty much everybody, so how have you kept yourself grounded, and what are some goals you were able to accomplish for the year?

2020 has been one of the craziest years by far but as far as I’ve been concerned with life in general it’s always crazy on I’m always constantly under pressure so it’s really no change to me the only thing that is helped me do is stay locked up in the studio even further and create more music

What artists and albums have you had in your rotation and what is your favorite album as of right now?

I listen to a lot of early logic talk in the 2015 stuff. I also listen to a lot of NF he’s very lyrical and inspires me to rap about more pressing issues in my life. I also love Blackbear, and I would say Tenoh. Tenoh is one of my best friends and a collaborative artist in Se7en Collective. I tend to always have his projects on rotation.

97B541BD-C095-4FE4-8168-A65526E95A5F.jpg

What artists would you say has the biggest impact on you and your overall sound, and if you could work with any one artist right now who would you choose?

An artist that has had a huge impact on me is Tenoh for sure. He really took my vocals to the next level and showed me how to really work with my voice. I owe a lot of my newer projects to him to be completely honest. As far as my earlier stuff, I grew up listening to a lot of rock and early 90s hip-hop so 2Pac you know Nas, Wu-Tang Clan - all of that. I always love that kind of stuff.

If I could work with any artist right now it would either be 88Glam, FRVRFRIDAY or NAV. I’ve been having a lot of NAV in my playlist lately. His new album is really hard. Its just been inspiring me to do more with my music.

So getting into your music last year you release your album Se7en Season tell us about this album, what inspired it, and what your goal was it it?

Se7en Season actually came together in a span of 12 hours. I kind of locked myself in the studio with my producer Deuce and it was my first time ever making an album or a collective project for that matter at all. Really what I was aiming for was to make a cohesive body of work that didn’t sound too similar but has that very well cleaned up overall sound. I think I achieved that. Seven Season Two is on the way and I’m very very excited to see what comes with it.

On Seven Se7en you worked with some amazing underground talent Huehef, Szn, Nationaal Jeugd Orkest. How did you meet with each of these artists and what producers did you work with to put this project together.

Se7en Season is entirely produced by “Deuce” and coproduced by me. It originally came up kind of randomly we were just in the studio vibing. We made a few songs back to back and then kind of kept going. I ended up linking up with Huehef, he was in the studio and he heard my song “Trying” and asked me if he could hop on it and you know I said of course, and the rest was history.

Let’s talk about your newest project Moonboy - EP which you just released this past year, what inspired this album and how did you pair up with Iriasona for a feature.

Moon Boy was inspired by one of my tracks I created earlier in 2019 called Phases. It’s just such a special track to me. I spent so much time and countless hours mixing and mastering it and getting it perfect in my eyes. Its honestly one of my favorite tracks I’ve ever created. I was trying to bring in the 2017 vibe with this project and I think I really hit that correctly. Pairing up with Irisona was a great thing I actually found her through one of my producers. As far as that goes I had messaged her on Instagram and you know from there it was a wrap.

What producers helped you put the project together and what would you say are your favorite tracks on the project?

The two main producers I had used for Moonboy was Paryo and Caps. They’re both really really good at catching specific vibes and giving a full body of work that speaks for itself. To be honest I’d say my personal favorite song on the project has to be either Phases or Don’t Leave. They’re just really hard hitting and when you listen to them you kind of hear a specific message underneath all the metaphors.

IMG_4208.PNG

So what’s next for you where do you see your self going from here?

Where do I see myself going… without being cocky, straight to the top.

Who should we interview next for Nefarious Supply?

I believe the next person you should interview is Tenoh. I mean there’s not a person I know that works harder than him. Definitely one of the hardest out in Canada for sure. He’s next up on Se7en.

Any last words?

I would say if you’re looking to start your music career or you’re starting your music career just remember that this is the endless floor for creativity and there’s really no ceiling. I would advise everybody to step outside themselves and away from what they consider to be comfortable and really just do the best you can at breaking all your barriers and finding out who you are as a musician. There’s nothing more freeing than that. It’s honestly addicting. I truly appreciate Nefarious Supply for this interview, and I hope that everyone stays safe and has a great rest of the year.
