WSTSIDE IN THE HILLS - Album Interview

8753655A-4D48-467B-97BC-A36453CC21B3.jpeg

How did you meet Moflo Music and what led to the collaboration?

I met Moflo Music through a good artist friend of mine by the name Tarron Belle and he was like “bro you have to link with Moflo because he’s the goat” so i said bet and hit the bro up and it’s been effortless ever since.

Give us some background on WSTSIDEHILLS, what inspired the album and what themes and sounds were you going for in creating this EP?

I was going for a dark melodic trap/island in the hills sound for imagery purposes just to paint a picture for the listeners.

How long did it take to create the EP, and at what point did you know that it was ready?

2 days honestly but I ended up adding a couple songs later before the release.

IMG_2190.jpeg

The EP is truly heat from front to back with each song sounding different from each one, can you break down each song for us?

Yes of course starting with Involved which is about being out of a relationship with someone, but because you both are in the same area and you hear about each other and even though you lust for one another it doesn’t mean you should be involved with them because some people are just bad for you.

Speed is all about the transition between friendships and relationships where you start the process of elimination because some people just aint on the same shit as you therefore  they’re not up to speed.

762 is just a metaphor for a bullet symbolizing losing yourself for someone ultimately dying to be reformed but at the same time glorifying a ride or die women who is with whatever for her man. Sometimes we say “if a person doesn’t love me for me then i don’t want them” but sometimes we don’t own up to the fact that we must change to become a better person for ourselves and for who we love.

Cease Fire is all about someone not having to “put a gun to your head” for you to love them or treat them how they should be treated. The song can also be received as being rejected and let down but having the heart to withstand the pressure because some people go through a lot in life and it takes a strong person to be patient and be willing to break down those walls.

Yute is all about a girl talking down on my name and treating me like I am capable of making childish decisions with her heart such as cheating or lying to her but what she doesn’t know is that her friends are jealous and putting that in her head because they can’t find a man like me “misery loves company”

Criminal is all about being single and before you can blink you’re in a relationship and in love before you know it as if someone stole your heart.

Miss Out is all about whether or not a girl is willing to take this ride with me through fame and everything that comes with it and just be down for me and if not she got to go simple.

Let’s talk about the features, you feature 3 artists who we’ve actually interviewed before Hrtbrkfever, Serena Isioma, And Dazeoneast. What made you feature them in the EP, and what’s your background with them?

I discovered Hrtbrk through soundcloud I started with playing Frvrfriday and songs just kept playing until it got to one of his crazy songs called “Gunonsafety ft Lnlyboy” and his social media was attached so I hit him up and everything else is history that’s my brother for sure.

Serena did my interview for Nefarious Supply The Goats” and she hit me up when i posted “I need a female vocalist for my Ep” and she was so confident that something made me comfortable with choosing her even before i checked her music out. She is amazing!

Last but not least “The Carolina Reaper” , Dazeoneast I fuck with bro so heavy and he is very reliable for example if you send a open to him it’s going to be flawless when you get it back plus he is very genuine and lowkey with everything. All of these artists I named inspire me everyday and it’s no doubt that they will be big one day.

When can we expect visuals for WSTSIDEHILLS?

Honestly i want to take a route where I drop a visual of a single that no one has ever heard before and it just shocks everyone, just something fresh and unexpected.

What’s your favorite song on the EP and why?

Involved i just think as an intro it definitely hits and is very universal situation everyone can relate to.

What can we expect from you and HILLSIDE Records?

Winter is coming and this is when you will hear the best of me. Also visuals and more of a raw version of me  just being more vulnerable and open to let listeners in my life..

Chelsea Baker

So tell us about your self?

My name is Chelsea Baker, I’m 22 years old currently Graphic Design at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) located in Boca Raton FL. I have a huge passion for art- Not only photography but music, videography, illustrations, and everything in between! I play the piano and sing- recently becoming part of a music group with my brother (hrtbrkfever) called “PrettyDreams”. When I’m not designing, illustrating, or making music- I am my brothers full time personal photographer and editor here in Deerfield Beach, FL- My specialty being portraiture, landscape and aerial shots.

When did your passion for photography start?

I began photography when I graduated high school- I was a female baseball player most of my life and my mom always photographed all of my games. Eventually when I came to college, I gained an interest in photography and she passed me down all of her equipment. From there my passion only grew and I began to invest more time and money into my hobby- making it my passion ever since.

Enlight1157.JPG

Is there a common aesthetic that flows throughout your work?

A common aesthetic found in my photos are the angles being shot and the colors I tend to incorporate. My favorite lens being 10-18mm- I am able to create unique, wide angled shots giving my pictures their own aesthetic feel. As far as color, color is everything in a photograph. I always make sure to have a careful eye for my model’s outfit color scheme and how it contrasts with the background scenery. Having your own aesthetic is what makes you stand out as a creator- color and angle only being two of many things I make sure of when taking photographs.

If you were called for the shoot of a lifetime and only had time to grab five pieces of gear, what are you bringing and why?

I’m bringing my 10-18mm lens and my 50 mm lens (my two favorites- one for unique perspective (10-18mm) one for portraiture (50mm)) as well as my handheld tripod for stabilization and any long exposure I may need. I would bring my drone for aerial shots- of course! Lastly my Canon 7D with my laptop and chargers- for editing and re charging up!

What is the most challenging shot you’ve ever taken?

I shot a wedding by myself (noob mistake) when I was 20 years old. By far the most challenging time for me as an artist. The wedding party consisted of over 25 people, getting all of them together while keeping account of lighting, angle, background, and main focus was very difficult for me. Let alone it was an outside wedding- raining most of the time!

Enlight1162.JPG

What are the qualities that appeal to you most in a subject?

I love landscape photography just as much as portrait photography of models, animals, etc. When photographing nature, the sea, etc. I am very drawn to horizons. Seeing where the earth meets the sea, in a unique appealing way. I appreciate natural colors but enhancing my landscapes saturation and vibrance is always key for me!! Color is happy. :) When shooting models I’m very drawn to the contrast of the model and their background along with the unique poses and outfits of a model- it can easily make a boring photo great!

Do you have a dream location where you’d like to have a shoot? As a kid, I loved

National Geographic. I collected all of the magazines, just for the pictures. The Wildlife and it’s animals are so intriguing, I’ve always been interested in everything animals so being able to shoot in a jungle/ wildlife area would be a dream come true for me.

Who’s photography work inspires you and why?

Sergei Muzlov is a huge inspiration for me- a photographer based in Moscow. I discovered his work through social media-Tumblr, instagram, and other photography networks. Since I do more in the creative realm than photography, such as illustrate and design, I have many inspirations. Some because of their photoshop skills, color balance, or aesthetics. But Sergei Muzlov was one of the first people I found that use color in such a unique, individual way. His photos look real enough to touch, his way of editing his models to blend with his image is brilliant! I often find myself looking through his portfolio for night time photography inspiration, color ideas, and much more.

How do you get the subject in front of your lens to translate to the work of art you have in mind?

I always ask my model to send me their outfit ideas prior the photoshoot. When that is set in stone, I begin thinking of locations and ideas- gaining inspiration from photographers and models I’ve seen with similar styles and vibes. Sometimes I will create a small album of references pictures for myself and the model to see the ideas I have in mind- not only will that make them feel more comfortable but saves me time , making the whole process much easier.

What is your process when deciding on a location that compliments your subject?

IMG_6927.JPG

I usually base my locations on the model and their vibe as well as the time of day and the weather. If my model is going for a laid back feel with dull colored clothing, taking them outside by the beach with flowers and waves isn’t my first idea. Say my model is wearing a highlighter yellow outfit- I know right away Im going to place them in front of a teal or maybe a pink wall or some type of contrasting background/foreground. After that- I’m looking for an angle that provides the composition with a aesthetic perspective whether that be the position of me holding the camera or the model posed a certain way. I make sure the location I choose is flexible enough for me to edit the photos in a creative way- whether that be through color enhancement, lighting, or scenery.

Is there a particular photographic style or technique that you look forward to

Mastering?

I look forward to mastering lighting. As a photographer lighting is one of the key components in taking your pictures to the next level. It’s very easy to shine a light and take a photo, use flash, or turn up the brightness in photoshop- but being able to take a RAW photo with the right exposure and brightness takes a lot of skill and mastering.

What everyday object do you think has a beauty that is often overlooked?

Architecture. Everywhere you look- inside or outside- the simplicity of things lining up, being placed in a symmetrical way through walls, buildings, or objects is something I feel is often overlooked. As a photographer, keeping in mind those little details like buildings in the back, fence posts, traffic signs, is crucial. Lining up a model with a hotel building, play on perspective and color are a few examples of using the beauty of architecture in your art to enhance detail- making your style that much more detailed and appreciated.

Are there any upcoming projects that you’re excited about?

I’m shooting a music video for my brother (hrtbrkfever) by the end of summer for an upcoming single. I don’t have much content promoting myself as a videographer but it’s a hobby that developed through taking pictures and designing at FAU so I look forward to brining his music to life through film instead of only being able to capture it in a single shot photo.

Hrtbrkfever

I have to ask this. What inspired the name HRTBRKFEVER?

So if you have listened to my music once, you will know I'm a loverboy, hopeless romantic. I was making music under a different moniker & was recommended to rebrand myself by someone that I look up to & think very highly of. Back in the day I had made a song titled ‘FEVER’ & i started thinking that would be such a dope name. But knowing that could possibly be in use or drown out to all the searches of ‘fever’, I knew I needed to add something else to it. I had come up with a bunch of different words but being the heartbroken soul that I am, it was only right to go by HRTBRK with the vowels missing in the spelling just because that looks cool, right? So the meaning behind my name goes hand in hand with the reference ‘Baby Fever’. “HRTBRKFEVER” refererring to me wanting to be heartbroken to turn my experiences into musical content for the HRTBRKN people of the world.

What makes your music stand out from other people’s music.

I personally believe that it all comes down to passion. I have put my heart & soul into my music & that is the main force behind my success (as it is anyone else). I always feel that I have a ton of growth left to my name but I have always tried to make music that makes me feel some type of way. I like to connect to other people through music. I always try to tell some type of story in a song, but in such a way that the vibe & bounce is never broken, even if you aren’t listening to or relating to what im saying you can appreciate the sound. I’m just like everyone else though, I just try harder than some people.

I notice that you focus on posting your music on Soundcloud. Why do you choose that platform over others such as Spotify and Apple Music?

Honestly at first it wasn't on purpose lol, but at this point in time I am just working on focusing on certain fan bases and creating leverage. I have music on all streaming sites but I usually get the most reaction out of Soundcloud, I like being a Soundcloud singer haha. I believe it is important to create traction on one site & once the timing is right, everything else will overflow. But now that you remind me I might go drop a hit strictly not on SoundCloud.

What has your experience been like in the music industry?

I have been making music for 10 years, I honestly didn't make any revenue from it until this year. So that has been super exciting, I have had my ups & downs in the music industry but at the end of the day I only focus on creating with other people that influence me & inspire me to be better. I have had great experiences traveling to different states strictly for music business. My best memories to date have been working with Bizness Boi at his home studio, performing at Chasing Sound’s event in LA & working on music with one of my favorite artists FRVRFRIDAY. Any of my bad experiences aren't worth mentioning.

Do you want to venture out into any other careers? If so, which one(s) and why?

Honestly I do not care to, I will always be a creative soul & have found ways to create revenue through my passion. If i were to do anything else besides music I would become a Professional Golfer or Professional Poker player. (I am better off sticking to Plan A.

What’s a normal day like for you?

Usually I wake up and meditate a few minutes, then I like to go get a Cold Brew & make a song. If I get stuck in the process I will go play a round of golf or just find a different beat. I try and make a couple songs a day. Usually i will knock out a few features & by that time I either have to go serve table *no me gusta* or make more music.

What kind of music did you listen to growing up?

Back in the day John Mayer is the sole reason I loved music. I always listened to country music at an early age being a small town dude, but I fell in love with writing love songs. I listened to John Mayer, Frank Ocean, Brian McKnight & Drake. I was always covering those artists with my band.

What kind of music do you listen to now?
Now I listen to a lot of underground R&B trap type music. I listen to FRVRFRIDAY, Mikey100k, Servvvone, HIDDENHILLS, DAZEONEAST, LNLYBOY, NO1 NOAH, B1uan, YE ALI. Mainstream wise I love Blackbear, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Chris Brown, Tory Lanez, Drake, Bryson Tiller, TY$.

Screen Shot 2019-07-07 at 2.46.43 PM.png

Describe your sound to someone who has never heard you before.I would say my sound has a lot of influence in R&B & POP with trap style beats. Its hard to say though because I like to make all kinds of music, I have songs with rock influences, punk influences, EDM influences.

Are you working on anything that you can tell us about?

I'm actually working with my little sister on creating an artist duo group under the moniker ‘PRETTYDREAMS.’ We live together & have created some hits in my home studio. I am really looking forward to shaping that brand with her. We are filming a music video for one of our releases next month. Personally, I am in the works of releasing my first official music video as well which is something to look forward to. My next single features FRVRFRIDAY, produced by Bizness Boi, going to be timeless. Other than that, I have hundreds of songs I don't know what to do with lol. But I have been creating a lot of dope vibes with my brother HIDDENHILLS, we have set ourselves up to drop some really special sounds.

Any last words?

i still love you.
