Aria Bléu - Talent Over Clout's Newest Muse

Aria Blèu thank you for reaching out to set up an interview with Nefarious Supply! We are really excited to feature you on the blog this week! So just to get started introduce yourself who is Aria Bléu and what experiences led you down the path to becoming an artist? 

Of course! You guys are amazing, thank you for having me. I’m Aria Bléu, and I’m an up and coming R&B/Neo-soul artist. I’ve been singing for just about as long as I could talk. Music has always been a big part of my life, especially coming from such a musical family myself. I gained my initial fanbase from being on Season 14 of NBC’s The Voice. My time on the show really molded me into a better singer and performer, but it wasn’t until after being eliminated that I was able to find out who I was as an artist and the space I wished to occupy in music. While I was on the show, I needed to uphold a certain tv-friendly image, and that ended up seeping through to every aspect of my life, even down to what I posted on social media and how I carried myself in public. It felt like I was constantly walking on eggshells and through that experience, I realized that’s the opposite of how I want to approach music and my artistry. I want to be unapologetically me. I want to be transparent and expose the hard-to-look-at parts of myself. I want my music to be honest and raw. As an artist, I want people to really see who I am and get to know me through the lyrics I sing.

Where or what are you representing with your music? What concepts and themes drive the foundational aspects of the creation of your sound? Why are these concepts and themes, if any, so important to you?

I think the biggest theme you can find in my music has to do with the content of my songs and how I approach songwriting. With most of the songs I write, I try to take a specific moment/experience and stretch it throughout the length of the song as opposed to singing in abstractions or generalities. 

For example, the meaning of my songs aren’t typically as abstract as “being in love” instead the song would be about going on a “Joyride” and realizing through the nuances of that ride that you don’t want it to end (hinting at the bliss, fresh feelings of new love). Another example would be “On & On”, where instead of speaking in general terms and feelings experienced during a “break-up” I take it a step further and hone in on that moment when your ex is begging you to take them back, but all you can think about is how they keep going on & on ….. and on & on!

It’s really important for me to take these distinct relatable moments and write a song detailing that experience because I find it resonates so much more with my listeners. In these moments, my fans feel seen and heard and that’s my end goal. I never want to seem surface-level, disconnected, or vague. I want my listeners to know that I’m right there with them and these moments happen to everyone! You’re not alone!

Who inspires you for your sound? Who were the main influences in your life that helped you along the way or maybe even said something in a book or tv show one time that inspired you? Who, if anyone, would you say is a major?

Lauryn Hill is hands-down my biggest inspiration of all time. I grew up listening to her music on repeat, and even in my adult years continued to listen to her endlessly. I’m 100% sure there isn’t one song of hers that I don’t know (super fan, I know). Her tone, her demeanor, and overall sound have been something I’ve studied and loved for years. It’s funny because after I reintroduced myself as Aria Bléu and right before I dropped my EP, Familiar Stranger, I saw a clip of her on IG talking to a crowd during a live performance that really resonated with me. In the clip she says, “this the first time y’all meeting me, don’t think you met me before... and as I grow you're gonna meet me a little bit more, you're going to be exposed to the real me a little bit more … I had to reintroduce myself to everyone I know... yall never knew me, I wanna introduce you to me… I’m just getting to know me.”

This is the exact message I wanted my audience to hear and to digest. Yes, you saw me on The Voice, yes we went to high school together, hell, even college, maybe we worked together, but at the end of the day, you do not know me. I have changed and adapted in ways I didn’t even think were possible during the creation of my debut EP. During that time, I was able to really put myself out there and reopen old wounds for everyone to see. I wanted to start from scratch, lay myself out on the table, and I wanted everyone to receive me only in the ways I’m willing to share. No preconceived notions or projections. Just take what I give and I’ll allow you to get to know me as I get to know myself. 

What would you say keeps your current audience listening and why should people start listening if they haven’t already? What parts of you as an artist do you feel are most attractive to your audience?

I’ve been told on numerous occasions that my music brings listeners feelings of nostalgia. That has been my audience's favorite part of my music -- the way it makes them feel. It’s not gimmicky, it’s not fake, just genuine lyrics, soothing melodies, and warm vocals that bring back memories of R&B’s primetime. My music has drawn comparisons between Lauryn Hill, India Aire, Toni Braxton, etc and people have always told me my deep raspy tone is what draws them in. 99% of my inspiration comes from 90’s Neo-Soul and 2000’s R&B so I probably should expect it, but you couldn’t imagine how flattered I am every time someone loops me into that category. I say all that to say this, if you haven’t heard my music and you miss “real r&b” (not my words, don’t shoot the messenger!), you’ll definitely want to check out my projects because I’ve been told it sounds like I’ve stepped out of a time machine!

Who do each of you listen to on a regular basis? Who are your go-to artists that really strike your creative nerve? Or are simply your favorite artists to sit back? 

I would say my Top 5 go-to artists are Lauryn Hill (obvi), Ari Lennox, Destiny’s Child , Masego, and Amy Winehouse. They all kind of play a different part in how they inspire my own music. Lauryn gives me the warmth, Ari Lennox gives me the silliness, Destiny’s Child the melodies, Masego the musicalities, and Amy Winehouse with the sassiness. I keep them all in my rotation at all times, and no matter how many times I’ve listened to them, it slaps just as hard as the first time.

You recently just signed a management deal with the start up company Talent Over Clout which is a collaborative effort from R&B Radar and Tom Boy Records, how did that happen and tell us about your experience working with them so far?

At the end of 2019, I found RnBRadar and instantly fell in love with their playlists and IG page. It seemed like every week I was being put onto a new underground artist! Before I dropped my first ever single, On & On, I sent them a music submission to see if they wanted to collaborate with me and offer promo services. They agreed, saying they loved the song, and that they’d be happy to collab! From there, it was history. The initial support I got from Tommy Banks (Founder of RnBRadar) was unmatched and I immediately knew I wanted to keep him in my circle. As time went on, he continued to repost my music, add me to playlists, set up external opportunities for me, and just loudly support my entire music career without me even asking. He was genuinely invested in my success as an artist. Needless to say, when he offered the opportunity to manage me, it was a no brainer! He had already proved his work ethic and he’s shown his passion for my art; that’s all I needed. I’ve been signed to Talent Over Clout for less than a month and when I tell you the number of doors that have already been opened for me because of it, you’d be amazed. There is so much TOC has been doing behind the scenes to really get me to the next level and into more ears, I just can’t believe we didn’t do this sooner!  

Not too long ago you released your EP “Familiar Stranger” which is an amazing project! So just tell us about it, what inspired the overall sound of the EP, who helped you on the production end of things, and give us a quick walk through for each track? 

Thank you so much! Familiar Stranger is such an important project to me and I’m so glad my introduction into music was something I can honestly say I’m proud of and I didn’t stop working on until I felt it was right. The EP went through many different phases, I often joke that the EP itself is a familiar stranger to the EP I began with. Songs changed, ideas adapted, and ultimately I made sure Familiar Stranger was a project that would properly reintroduce myself to the world. Although I may seem familiar, my journey could definitely warrant me a stranger to some.

Familiar Stranger in its entirety tells a story about the 5 stages of a relationship gone sour: the honeymoon phase, the impulsive infatuation, the messy break-up, the toxic back and forth, and finally the emotional resolution. At the start of the EP, Joyride is sonically trance-like, playing on the idea that new love can be mesmerizing even while doing the simplest things like going for a long drive. Livening things up a bit, we move onto Mirage which shows us the risque side of new love by tempting my boyfriend (at the time) to sneak away with me and leave everything else behind. In the next track , listeners are met with a jazzy band, upbeat energy, and my way of quickly humbling my recent ex; telling him I see through the facade and know he's only with his new girl, to make me jealous. Mission failed. This upbeat energy is continued into the next track, Reminiscing, where I know I shouldn’t be dealing with my toxic ex, but hey, who else am I gonna call at 3am? Familiar Stranger then closes with my debut single, On & On, where I poke fun at my ex, allowing him to beg for another chance, while all I can focus on is the unconvincing rambling. 

Juan Zeek produced 4/5 songs on the EP (impressive, right!?) and Charlie Heat x Matt Busco produced Mirage. I spent a lot of time in LA and Philly studios with Charlie Heat, writing and recording the songs on my EP. He really helped me with getting my reps up in the studio and getting used to being in that environment. The process of writing, recording, and getting this EP produced was such an eye-opening one that although there were many roadblocks and delays, I wouldn’t trade it for the world!

What are some goals you have accomplished so far in 2020 and before the year is over what are goals you hope to achieve?

Well for starters, I just signed with Talent Over Clout for management and Roc Nation’s EQDistro for distribution, so I’ll say I’m well beyond my expectations here! Familiar Stranger has accumulated over 390k+ streams and has been featured in multiple digital publications, including Lyrical Lemonade and Hype Magazine. My latest single, Theory of You, has been met with overwhelmingly positive praise and has been my most successful release week to date. On top of that, both releases have landed placements on numerous playlists, such as Tidal’s “Rising R&B”, “Sleeping on Gems”, “Lyrical Lemonade”, and RnBRadar’s “R&B Gems.” I’m incredibly blessed to have these kinds of opportunities at such an early point in my career!

As for the rest of my 2020 goals, as long as I continue to make consistent growth on my streaming numbers and steadily increase my fanbase, I’ll be happy! If I had to pick concrete checklist goals, I’d love to perform one of my songs live for the digital music platforms such as, COLORS, NPR’s Tiny Desk, BBC Radio live, etc before the year ended. Any of those would be such an insane opportunity.

For new musicians just starting out what is some advice you would give to them that you wish you knew when you first started?

I would say surround yourself with people that truly believe in your art and your vision. Don’t get caught up in the idea that someone else may know what’s best for you and their changes will be for the better (trust me, it doesn’t end well). Don’t get caught up in the clout and numbers game. It’s better to grow with someone that has your back, then trying to jump on the bandwagon of someone who will kick you off in a heartbeat. You know yourself better than anyone else. Remain in control of your creative process and your brand. Manifest your realities because as soon as you truly believe in it and can see it for yourself, I promise you the pieces will fall into place. Be a vessel and let the music work through you. Remove your ego, pride, and all things that can stifle creativity and be authentically you!!!!

Kaash Paige - Teenage Fever

D’kyla Paige Woolen, known professionally as Kaash Paige is a break out singer-songwriter, hailing from Dallas, Texas. Signing with Se Lavi Productions and Def Jam Recordings at just 19 years of age, Paige is also now managed by the Jay-Z helmed Roc Nation. With this and her blowing up on TikTok Paige had all the right ingredients to drop a lustrous freshman album, and solidify herself as a new addition to the game.

So, she did.

London

The first track on the album, Kaash starts the album with a slow-burning production with a nice guitar progression and a complimenting 808 that slows even further to mesh with her warped vocals at points of the track. Paige speaks on topics of loyalty, her ambitions for the future, and how she peeps everything from her spot at the famous London, hence the title.

Grammy Week

Grammy Week is pretty self-explanatory in its theme. Kaash sings and raps over a watery and clouded beat which clears itself up to reveal some subtle synth-like progressions overtop a nice and staccato-sequel beat. With a fitting guest feature from Don Toliver, the two touch on the topic of success, with even Kaash predicting her Grammy night at the beginning of the track.

Lost Ones

Kaash slides over Lost Ones, her voice dances over the beat effortlessly and her vocal runs, plus the flow of her lyricism lead the listener on a nice yet compelling journey, letting them get comfortable but not complacent in actively hearing her lyrics, which touch on love and the search for the lost ones in question. 

Soul Ties (ft. ssgkobe)

With a beautiful guitar riff opener, Kaash Paige slides onto the first few seconds of Soul Ties with a fitting, soulful take on her fear of being taken for granted and played with. ssgkobe compliments this theme by reassuring that as long as they're together she’s all he’s focused on. Together they ride out the chorus. “Down for the worse or the better.” 

Fake Love (ft. 42 Dugg)

Seeming to be a recurring theme in her style of music, Kaash starts off Fake Love with a bouncy, repeating guitar riff, which is soon flavored with tasty 808s and synths. The production surrounds Paige’s vocals in a beautiful coating, as if they're both guiding each other to a satisfying finish. Her topic is very straight forward, and 42 Dugg hammers this point home with his pinpoint feature. 

Jaded

A darker and more introspective take on her new relationship with the individual in question, revealing the problems that have strained their relationship from the start. She reassures that all they need is some practice, because at this point, their love seems to have come to a halt. Paige again effortlessly conveys her message with a vibe attached. 

FRIENDS

An upbeat addition on Teenage Fever, Paige switches between beats and warped vocals, creating an almost Travis Scott-esque atmosphere for the listener as she conveys her lack of trust for the world. She can't be more than friends with anyone, and can't even imagine anything more than those car rides in a Benz.

 

Break Up Song (ft. K CAMP)

Break Up Song is Kaash Paige’s apology in advance to anyone she gets involved with. She’s a dog through and through, and wants them to know they can easily leave her be, but if they want to be apart of the world, then here’s the disclaimer. K CAMP eats his verse and rides the wave reinforcing Paige’s take before she swings back in for the infection hook once again.

Pull Up 

Kaash Paige rides yet again with an addicting acoustic opener that climbs before dropping into a deep and full 808, that Paige dwells in before surfing into the chorus of the track. Pull Up has Paige keeping things lowkey with someone, asking them to pull up (most likely in the aforementioned Benz) and getting lit in the front seat, and back. 

Problems (ft. Isaiah Rashad)

With an incredibly rare feature from TDE’s very own Isaiah Rashad, Paige pours her soul out on the track, even starting off the bat telling the listener there’s a lot on her mind. Spending habits, soul searching, inconsistency, these are all worries that Paige is completely transparent about. Rashad conveys how he deals with these perpetual problems in life, by heading to his “throne” or his crib, where his friends stay, lighting up a jay and vibing with the crew for the night. 

SOS

Paige’s acoustic intro is softer and more deliberate on SOS, and her vocals, which stay the same in intensity and tone, are focused to more lighter and colorful aftertones. Her vocals are beautiful, with the autotuned runs doing feats akin to Trippie Redd’s level raw intensity. Fake friends, failed relationships, the price of fame, political strife, even through it all Paige still has the strength to know that the sun shines on, after the darkest nights. 

Mrs. Lonely 

A synth opening this time, Paige vibes on the intro, before creatively asking what the point of friends even is if they end up leaving in the end. Paige feels mentally lost and as if her time is running out, the only thing that seems to slow this down are the drugs she consumes. At the end of the melancholy second-to-last, Paige ponders what the other side looks like. 

Karma 

The final track on Teenage Fever, Paige takes a moment to sit down and talk with the listener about this crucial stage of adolescence, and all that comes with it, depression, relationships, love, hate, drugs, and as she says, everything else. The production gradually raises with the intensity of her voice, before all coming to the momentous halt, and then Karma starts. The aforementioned other side? Yeah, this is it. And instead of wondering about it, Paige actively yearns for the deceptive mistress. 

For the last track, Paige hammers it home that she is here to stay, past TikTok, past any dance or singing challenge, or any views, Kaash Paige has made her mark.

2morrownight - Summer With You

2morrow night bro welcome back to Nefarious Supply! Last time we caught up with you was March and with how 2020 has been that feels like a lifetime! So just give us an update with you, what’s going on and how has your 2020 been so far?

First of all appreciate all the love & support I get from y'all foreal been with me since day one and also thanks for featuring me on your platform again. Since the last interview I had with y’all I’ve been doing a lot more music either with my own singles, production for other artist, or mixing for other artists. I’ve just been active and tryna get my name out there more. Also been working on my first EP, Summer With You, that just dropped !

So with the start of Covid everything was shut down and the majority of the US had to stay indoors for quarantine so my question is how did you spend your quarantine were you able to accomplish some goals you had? 

So far with Covid happening I’ve actually lost the studio I’ve been working at for music which lead to me working from home for music, but personally I feel like I’ve made the best music I’ve ever made so far with my home studio setup. I feel that so far I’ve accomplished my goal which was creating an EP and drop it this year.

In addition to accomplishments, what artists did you bump during quarantine and what are some of your favorite albums of the year so far? 

I’ve been bumping a lot of underground RnB artists like: Marr Grey, Cliff, Lais and more. I like to support the underground scene since I’m part of that as well. I’ve been listening mainstream music as well like The Weeknd & Drake, but also one of the artist/albums that stood out for me during quarantine was Limbo by Aminé. That album was put together very good. My favorite song off that project would be Compensating (feat. Young Thug). Overall I would say that’s my fav album of 2020 so far.

So after much anticipation you just dropped your debut project “Summer With You”, give us a brief introduction and tell us about the meaning of the title as well as what inspired it? 

Yes finally my debut Ep, Summer With You, is finally out !!! It’s a 5 track Ep that features: Cliff, DazeOnEast, & Sean Bay. The meaning of the title is basically just the life and time spent with my girl in the summer time and made it into a project. What inspired me to create this project was a beat pack that RO$EGOLD sent me while I was in my old studio, which was the beat that is now a song, Drink Smoke (feat. DazeOnEast & Sean Bay). That was the first track I recorded, but at the time was only the chorus and some freestyles.

Summer With You is an amazing addition to your discography  and features 5 tracks walk us through each of them and who helped you with production as well as mixing and mastering with each?

So, Summer With You has 5 tracks with amazing artists featured and very talented producers.This project was made in my brothers bedroom with my own studio setup. The project was mixed by Merkzyyy and mastered by Soundsbymoon.

Starting with the first track off the project, Appealing who features CLIFF. The production on this track was RO$EGOLD & UNKWN who did an amazing job. This track really gives a great intro track to the Ep.

The second track is Patient, which is the single I dropped for the project a couple months before the project dropped. The production was done by a good friend of mine Samuel Ivy. We worked not this track together in our studio we owned before.

The third track off the Ep is Drink Smoke (feat. DazeOnEast & Sean Bay). Production was done by RO$EGOLD. At first, the track was only featuring Sean Bay, but a couple weeks before finalizing the tracks I got DazeOnEast to feature as well which made the track a masterpiece.

The fourth track is Her Interlude produced by Anakin, which is my producing alter ego. I produced this beat in the beginning of 2020 and crazy that I came back to that beat after months and made the track. The final track is In or Nah (Prod. RO$GOLD). A very nice laid back dancehall track that gives nice outdo vibes for the project.

So in making this project did your creative process change from your usual, and if so what are some things that you did different with this project

The recording process for this project was way different then my previous tracks I’ve dropped. I usually had someone engineer for me in the old studio I worked at, but for this project I recored everything myself in my brothers room. Also, I usually write some stuff out while the beat plays, but this time was more of freestyles until I have the perfect recordings.

Off rip all 5 songs are good but some of my favorites on the album gotta be  “Drink Some”, and “Patient,what are some of your favorite tracks off of the album? 

I’d say my favorite tracks would be Drink Smoke & Patient as well along with the first track Appealing feat. Cliff. I would say personally those 3 tracks would be my best work so far.

Can fans expect any visuals to accompany the project?

Currently I am working on getting a Patient video going and Drink Smoke video as well just very difficult with covid going around, but forsake those 2 will have visuals soon.

So what’s next for you can fans expect any new music in the near future and what are some goals you hope to accomplish before 2020 ends? 

Maybe my fans can expect a Deluxe project for Summer With You depending on how they react or show love for the project. Definitely will have another great feature on there. Possibly a Patient remix who knows. I will get back on my every 2 weeks of dropping singles a lot of them RnB vibes for the fall and winter. One of the goals I want to accomplish before the year ends is definitely dropping visuals, have more fans that support me, and just give my fans more music !!! ISOLATION STATION EP 5 - AS WE PROCEED

In this segment we’re giving life to the leagues of music being dropped every week during this trying, yet, interestingly enough, personal time.

We at Nefarious Supply want you guys to always have a new underground project or creator, either on your mind, on your playlist, or on your feed in some way, shape, or form. In this instance, we’re doing this on an episodic basis and deciding to write on all the new music coming in through this station, five tracks at a time.

Our fifth episode shows us the importance of caution and quality in our next steps. “As we proceed” is a saying widely-known, especially throughout the African-American community, it propagates the feeling of hopefulness but also of care and attention to detail, of making silent and careful moves, then showing out with a bang when no one expects. As we proceed, let’s be creative, and committed.

Hatesonny - Damage Control 

We first heard Hatesonny on Serena Isioma’s Sensitive EP, specifically the track, Move, where the artist laid down a groovy and swelling verse, which complimented Serena’s feminine energy on the track almost flawlessly. On his new album, Golden Child, Hatesonny shows us exactly who he is as an artist.

From the piano-driven melody on top to the bass-thumping 808s beneath, Hatesonny delivers on every part of “Damage Control”, the first track off of his third album. Hatesonny comes with a vengeance for that #1 spot. 

Black$tar x Mayal - Jump in the Party

Black$tar and Mayal are back at it again on another piping hot track! The two Calgary natives strike while the iron is hot and make their mark on Jump In The Party. With a nostalgic beast of a beat with a grand production Black$tar gets his point across that he will have fun, no matter what, where, when, or why.

Flexing so much even his ex acknowledges he has it, Black$tar bars are uplifting and also direct and confident, meshing well with Mayal’s masterful use of autotune and melodic synergy with the beat, that he possesses on every track.

Jump in the Party is definitely a feel-good banger that you’ll be singing in the back of your head for a while.

SwaVay - Yaya

DOLO Records’ very own SwaVay features on this episode of the Isolation Station. The opening track “Yaya”, off of his album B4dalbum. Instantly, Kendrick comes to mind as the flute progression and the soft 808-led beat creep along the bottom of the track’s production, the emphasis is focused on SwaVay’s lyrics, and boy are they worth the attention.

Bars comparing Bernie Mac, stu pigeons, big dogs, and cool midgets, as well as thanking God for his Christian roots, not even insinuating, more so telling the listener to the point what he’d do if he wasn’t, these effortless flows as well as the carefully curated production are what put SwaVay ahead of most of his peers.

SAEED - Faded Freestyle

SAEED is back people! With his new freestyle, Faded, the Chicago artist tries to drink away his problems, may have fallen in love, or was it the drink in his hand? He’s confident but also unsure of himself. However, at the end of the day, he’s going to keep it moving and keep working.

This is the underlying theme of the track, however SAEED’s fun take on the overlaying theme of a drunken night in the club, vibing over a heavy-hitting, spacey beat is him in his prime lane and vibe, and we hope his sound only continues to evolve beautifully.

Freddy Leone & Apollo1027 - Freak Show (ft. David Sulky)

Freddy Leone and Apollo1027 team up on a surprise collab de3with their EP, The Third Generation. Their standout track, Freak Show, portrays Leone and Apollo in their prime form, seamlessly switching flows as they trade lyrical blows left-right overtop a beautifully full and brimming production style.

The beat focuses heavily on making the space for both artists to run at their fullest speed, with topics of sexual freedom, lost time, letting go, keeping secrets, promises kept and broken, and of course, having the money to fund the lifestyle that propagates these hazardous, yet intriguing situations.

Featuring artist, David Sulky’s, beautiful finishing verse before the refrain solidifies him as an artist to look out for. Sultry, high-vibrato tones put him on a pedestal for all to listen and love. Overall a standout track from these Orlando giants.

Walt Flames bro what’s up, what’s up thank you for coming on and interviewing with Nefarious Supply, just to get the interview started tell us a little bit about your self: Who is Walt Flames and what led you to become a musician?

I`m me!... Walter ... That`s Walt Flames. People be building this characters they  make up in there heads and become that..which is cool but Walt Flames..thats just me being myself ..not an exaggerated version though.  My friends pushed me into it early like 17-18 made a lil buzz then stopped completely ..& again years later but this time it stuck.


Since you’ve started what are some things you’ve learned, and if you could give your younger self some advice what would it be?

INVEST IN YOURSELF & NEVER LET UP……..Oh! And LEAVE THESE BITCHES ALONE!!!!! Some days shit don`t work but never force a song out. PRODUCTION IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS THE BEAT & CREDIT YOUR PRODUCERS!!!

So I see from your bio you're based out of Tennessee and you're actually one of the first artists from the area that we’ve had the platform to date. So just tell us how has this area had an influence on you and your overall sound? 

The First! Thats fye..its a lot of talent there though..i see we shining through the cracks finally.    Tennessee….Nashville! I been here for awhile ...I’m from Michigan but i`d be lying if i said Nashville didn’t make me.  The city a vibe but its a who you know city Alotta low-key parties kickbacks and shit.. I’m influenced by what i see & do here daily here ...you hear it in the music 

In addition to this what can you tell us about the underground music scene within the area?

IT`S LIVE!!! If we talking about rap, damn i wish i could just plug everybody! The whole scene  & the range is just crazy ...its something for everybody out here artist wise.

What artists would you say had the biggest impact on you and why?

Biggest impact! Fuck i dont now , Micheal Jackson DMX..HAHAHAHAH those the first artist that came to mind!

As an artist what do you think it more important to focus on quality or quantity and why?

Both! They work together...You can release high quality content consistently, that's ideal right?  But you can also release a song a week and that shit be ass...now you just a nigga wit 4 tapes worth of trash music...all your “fans” probably trolls too!


So music bro, everything is nothing but heat but i think you’re project Thrash and Burn is my favorite body of work from you, so just give us some background on the project, as well as what inspired it?

Thrash & Burn is some skate shit… my last project ‘It`s gon hurt’ was rowdy as fuck on the cover art im bailing on some trick falling. I always incorporate that part of my life in the music anyway I can ...that shit molded me into who i am. The EP or any body of work I do comes organically, random sessions, as well as random moments. For instance on the song “Never Fold” I had a session with Topper Atwood I had a verse down or something then Eddy Niz shows up & Toppers like “yo you should hop on this” & i think bukusteez had a session after me and showed up early & he hopped on too!  Shit be fye when things just fall into place like that           

Production on the project is amazing with producer Topper Atwood pretty much doing  the whole EP. How did you and him end up meeting and led to yall working together?

Can`t forget OHDEE! He & Topper made that Rikishibeat together!! I met Topper through Eddy Niz…. I think Eddy met him online. Topper use to come into town & stay with eddy sometimes the we would link until he finally just moved down to nashville..it was the craziest shit like damn he really fucking with us!

So looking over the rest of your music you’ve worked with a ton of talent including; Tre Stoner, OzM Boomlord, Bukusteez, Eddy Niz, Kemosabi and much more so just tell me what are some things you look for in another artist before you work with them, and how does your creative process switch up when working with them? 

I look at their beat selection first, if I’m sending one or an open verse, I hate when a mufukka send you some production or a verse that’s completely outta your lane. Like my nigga do you even listen to my music lol.   Nothing else really, maybe there content as far as what they talk about and tone, to me tone is important. Some peoples voices clash and don’t really work together on a track.

As well as artists what kind of qualities do you look for in producers?

If the beats are good im praying they`re good at production hahah that shit is crucial ...beat drops ..changing my voice all that shit

For anyone that does want to work with you what is the best way to reach you?

So when are we getting some new music bro?

I got 1 EP in the cut with Ohdee thats ready to FLY!!…& i got something in the works with Topper again too hahah Thrash & Burn 2 maybe, but we`ll see…. Expect something in June at the latest..then we on GO!

What are some things you hope to accomplish by the end of 2020?

I wanna expand my fanbase further out so we can set us these tours!! This interview is another step in that direction

Nefarious Supply Spotlight Dolo Records

With the hustle and bustle of everyday life it so hard to pay attention to what’s going on in the underground music industry especially with surrounding news regarding the pandemic, the current election, and other crazy news going on within the United States as well as globally. But don’t worry we Nefarious Supply are always locked into what’s going on in the underground music industry and this week we have you covered with our first episode of NS Spotlight. In this new content piece we showcase some of our favorite underground artists as well as creative groups that have been on our radar. This week we start with a group of artists who have been dominating Atlanta based DOLO Records.

First things first if you haven’t heard of DOLO Records do yourself a favor, stop reading and follow them on Instagram as well as Twitter because after you get through this article you’re gonna want to keep the label as well as the artists on your radar. Established by the 3 artists currently on their roster ( SwaVay, Hadi, and Jahnai) DOLO Records is a purely independent label with the goal of spreading music across the globe, connecting and gaining more supporters, and putting out meaningful projects to the world that draws more eyes on them. Started when the three artists were in high school DOLO Records has slowly grown into the creative experience that the artists have had in mind since they were young, and with the talent as well as sound diversity across the labels roster DOLO Records and the artists that make it up are positioning themselves for nothing but success. . 

Hadi - I Cant Die Yet

 Starting at the top is newcomer to our blog  Hadi and his album “I Can’t Die Yet” which I gotta say when I did an initial listen though I was blown away not only by the quality of the production but the bar he sets for himself as an underground artist. Dropped in 2018  “I Can’t Die Yet”  is inspired by a number of events in the young artist's life including seeing his peers death’s as well as almost losing his life to a car accident himself. According to Hadi his album title represents him not being done with his purpose here on earth and he is definitely thankful to get another chance to accomplish his goals. Featuring guest appearances from SwaVay (who also mixed and mastered the album) , Jahnai, TimxSpnt, and Chloé, as well as production from Erich Gutzler, and Meech and video production from Kevin Cruz of Kev Cruz Productions. Hadi overall sound with the album and visuals he has put out to accompany his work is very quality focused and is an example of an underground artist taking his role very seriously as he adds another body of work to his discography thats adds pure value to his overall brand. 

Jahnai - The Life

Next up is Jahnai and his latest project “The Life” a solid 8 tracks from beginning to end “The Life” is another great addition to the overall label’s collection of music and similar to his label mate Hadi you can tell that Jahnai takes his craft very serious and he put a lot  of thought and effort into his latest body of work. Inspired by the norm of having trials and tribulations the album epitomizes Jahnai playing the cards he is given and knowing that his current situation is not set in stone and he is destined for greatness. With the main meaning behind the title serving as an insight of his life that he is sharing with his audience. Featuring guest appearances from SwaVay, Dysfunctional Ron, and Hadi the 8 track as well as production from the same people “The Life” is another solid piece of work from a talented DOLO Records artist and is definitely worth a listen to. 

SwaVay - B4dalbum 

Unfortunately we weren't able to connect SwaVay but similar to his label mates B4dalbum is another project from DOLO Records that packs a punch not only in the production but the lyricism as well. Under 10 tracks B4dalbum opens up with a punch and ends with a banger with each song after the beginning track getting better and better. Featuring guest appearances from Brooklyn Summers, as well as Erick the Architect it’s safe to say like label mates SwaVay knows what he is doing in the studio and B4dalbum is another worthy addition to this artists discography as well as the collection of music already put out by the label.

Freddy Leone & Apollo1027 - The 3rd Generation EP

Freddy Leone first things first welcome back to Nefarious Supply, it’s been a while since we’ve featured you on the platform but in that time, you have made some substantial progress with your career, so just give us a quick update on what’s been going on with you, and what are some things you have accomplished in 2020?

Yes, it has! glad to be back brother. I believe its been about a year since the last interview and I think I only had 3 tracks out at the time. Ever since then, I have released more singles, production for other close artists, and released an EP with my brother Hrtbrkfever called Sad Boys & Nose Rings late 2019. It has been quite the experience and I have learned so much along the way over this period of time. Going into 2020, it has been a wild ride for everyone in the world. With this whole pandemic, politics, it can be hard to stay calm without any anxiety or fear. Luckily, I’ve managed to put my problems to the side and advance my producer skills by practicing new things every day. I can definitely say I am not the same producer I was last year. I have managed to come out of my comfort zone and produce, engineer, and sing on a couple tracks that are out on my SoundCloud. I am proud of the artist I have become and I cannot wait to see where I will be at this time next year.

Since we’ve last talked you started a new Instagram page to promote the music production side of your talents. how have things been going with that and have you been able to sell any of your beats to artists?

Yes, I have! I felt to myself that I was too locked away in the shadows and wanted to show snippets to others of where my production is at. I know I can be a versatile producer, so I wanted to see what kind of feedback I’d receive from the different beats on display. I try to post something new at least every day, if not, every week just to maintain activity. Shockingly enough there has been some interested artists in my work so there has been purchases made. Enough to the point where I even considered being a full time producer and quit my day job. With that being said, I actually made a YouTube and BeatStars account to help advertise my beats to a wider audience of artists. I hope that my purchase rates will rise in order for me to work fulltime on what I love doing the most.

How have things been on the artist end of things have you worked with any new people?

Thankfully yes, my name has reached some dope artists like Hiddenhills, Bond, ID (identification), and Cliff. I have also worked on collaborations with some crazy producers like Lonesome, Solon da G, 100graham, YLX, and ProdbyWKDBOY. We have so many files in the vault, who knows when or if it will all be used. They are all talented in their own way and I have had great experiences with them all. Behind the curtain you can say I am working with more artists, but nothing is official until we got some things recorded and put out.

Okay so let’s talk about your newest project which dropped yesterday which is a joint album with your close friend Apollo1027 titled “The Third Generation”. What got y’all together again for this joint album and how was the experience stepping back into thestudio with him again?

Yes, that’s my brother from the start of all this. We have some special vibes on this, and in my opinion, some evolutionary ones. It had been long awaited for us to make a collaborative tape and I was very excited for the drop. Me and Apollo1027 have made a numerous amount of tracks so it was only a matter of time. I presented the idea, “The 3rd generation” to him because of us being the third generation in our families. He liked the idea and started going thru some beats of mine to piece the project together. The first one recorded was “What Its Like” next was “Freak Show” then lastly “Best of Me”. All of this was decided and finalized within a couple months but was delayed due to final touches that were done on the tape.

 So 3 tracks all of which sound amazing! So just walk us through all 3, and tell us about what your favorite song is?

This project contains 3 tracks in total, first track is called “Freak Show” featuring our close friend David Sulky who did an amazing job on his part. His ambience really compliments the track. This track also features a friend I had in high school named Daniel Seymour who plays the violin full time and was nice enough to include some solo parts in the track. The second track is called “What Its Like” and it’s a very bouncy experimental track with unique drum patterns and majestic vocals. Definitely a favorite of mine and I can’t wait to see the feedback I get from it. Third track is called “Best of Me” featuring a talented individual who goes by Bismarck and he is a living legend saxophonist. I first heard his work on “kids don’t do drugs” by Hrtbrkfever and I was hooked immediately. I was honored enough to have him on this track as he gives it a more sexy, genuine feel. Using live instruments was something I been wanting to have done for quite some time now and I am very blessed to have had this opportunity. This tape holds only to mostly Rnb vibes so any Rnb heads out there, your welcome haha.

 Did you guys work with any other artists or producers on the project and if so how was the experience working with them?

So, the only other vocal artist on this project is David Sulky and other than that, it’s been the musicians included like Daniel Seymour on the violin and Bismarck on the sax. The experiences with all of them have been a walk in the park and was honored for all of them to be a part of this. I got to witness Bismarck record his sax live and it was very impressive to watch. My engineer, Edwin, located in Boca Raton Fl at the Forever Current recording studio also mixed and mastered the project together. I have worked with him on my previous EP and he always out does his work every single time. But yes, all production was made by me.

Can fans of you guys expect any visuals for the album and if so when are the gonna be dropping?

At this moment, the only visuals that had been posted was the promo video I posted on my IG a couple days ago. Due to the pandemic, we may or may not have a video done but at this moment, it is still undetermined. I would’ve loved to have something done though!

I gotta say you and Apollo1027 show no signs of slowing down and it’s amazing the work ethic you guys have for your craft. So my next question is what’s next for you in 2020, and will you guys be dropping a joint project anytime in the future? 

Oh yes, we are always working and I always bounce anything new to him whenever I can. That’s one thing I love about us is that we are always working on our craft no matter what. We are truly destined for this shit. Apollo has his EP, Summer Solstice 2 coming along right after our tape drops so expect to hear production by me on there as well. I am also trying to put an album together and hopefully it will be released this year as it is the goal! Another joint project? Of course. We will see what the future holds.

Nicko Flash - Juvenile Heart

What's up Nick, welcome to Nefarious Supply so just to get the interview started tell us a little bit about yourself and what got you started as a musician? 

When i was ten my family and i lived in an apartment and one day my dad bought a karaoke machine and that’s pretty much where it started I used to be on that thing 24/7 and at the time I liked Michael Jackson and Phil Collins i used to be singing all night and do performances in the living room for my mom and cousins. Since then over the years music became an addiction for me and a means of escape.

How long have you been making music and what artists would you say have had the biggest impact on you and your overall sound? 

I've been making music for 4 years. I started making beats on cell phone apps and then Linux MultiMedia Studio because I didn't have any money at the time. My biggest influences are The Weeknd, Anderson .Paak, Mac Miller, XXXTentacion, The Beatles and Drake. As for my sound I would say its introverted with and overall happy texture. I try my best to tell you how i'm feeling and also capture that feeling that's why all the beats are different and the feeling of each song is different 

What DAW do you currently use and walk us through your creative process from beginning to end?

I currently use FL studio and Pro Tools from time to time i have a love/hate relationship for Pro Tools but all my best work starts in Fl studio i’ll start making a beat and the moment i don’t like or any aspect of it i scrap it and start over especially when i have an idea on what the song should sound like i usually write out the hook and then go down to the studio or record it on my Shure SM7B at home and then improvise the verses around the hook.

So your newest album is coming. Juvenile Heart is coming out pretty soon and is a direct follow up to your previous work “Self Care - EP” which dropped in 2019. So tell us about your new album, what's the meaning behind the title? 

It's called Juvenile heart because it conveys growth from being young and naive it's also a representation on how my past relationships and heartbreaks changed me as a person

Are there any features on the coming album and who helped you with production?

Yes my close friend Oluwabukola Odediran, she goes by Bookie and she featured on the intro and the outro of the album. I produced tracks Two and five by myself much of the other tracks were done by my friend Cullen Wagner Roach who goes by 8milotb his production is very emursive and its very different from what you hear everyday I got amazing vocal help from my engineer Jonae Townsend who goes by Lady J she also helps the music feel more sincere. and i also got help from my East MD colleague and owner of J-Apollo Productions Jude Auguste who helped with the vocal vision for track 4 of the album.

Do you plan on putting out any visuals for the album? 

No comment but we’ll see in the near future most of visual work is done by sydney coley i love going back and forth with her on ideas she truly knows how to capture the visions i have in mind.

Hey Mirrors what’s up bro, thank you for coming on and t with Nefarious Supply, so to get this interview started introduce your self to the audience. Who is Mirrors and how long have you been a musician?

Thanks for having me, my names Amir (aka Mirrors) and I’ve been making music for about 4 years now. I started out producing; I was doing production for guys in my city like Seth Kay (aka SIDE), Teshalé, and Illyminiachi. My creative director featured one of my demos on the HICU Sound Tape in 2015 and my joint took off. I’ve been making my own music since.

What got you started as a musician, and since your start what are some things you have learned, and what would you say are some of the important lessons you’ve learned since you’ve started?

I’ve learned a lot since I started, but I’d say the most important lesson is to never expect handouts. Expectations in general will work against you. Count on yourself.

What would you say is the more important quality or quantity, and why?

Quality always. If you put enough time and effort into creating something timeless, it shows.

What artists would you say have had the most important influence on you and your overall sound, and why?

I’ve been exploring sounds in different genres like minimal house this year. Lately I’ve been inspired by The Weeknd, Safe’s latest album, and ZHU.

So you have a good amount of singles out right now but my favorites have to be “Seasons” and “Ghost”, tell us about those songs and what inspired them?

Just life bro. Both songs are inspired by my experiences and shit I’ve seen and been through. I rather let my music tell the stories.

You’ve worked with underground artist SHARÜK tell us about how you and him linked up and what got yall working together?

Thats the homie!! I met SHARÜK a minute ago through Borna, my creative director. Our circles are cool. He’s about to drop a project called Careless. SHARÜK’s single “I’M DEAD” gotta be one of my favourite joints.I got another joint with my brother Kid Sharif called “Supernatural” dropping this summer.

What producers have you worked with as well?

I’ll be dropping a joint with Vancouver producer KultarGotBounce soon.I haven’t worked with many producers, I usually make my own beats. @Producers — hit me up… I need beats.

When can we expect to hear a full length EP or album from you?

Going to keep focusing on releasing singles this year, but you never know, maybe sometime in the near future.

Are there any goals you want to accomplish before the year ends? 

Just make dope music man… Live, learn, and create. I’ve been quarantined making some moody music I want to drop soon. I’ll be shooting a video soon, set to drop at the end of the Summer.

Serena Isioma - Move (ft. Hatesonny)

“I don’t even like the club, but I like my check too loud I’m up.”

Serena Isioma has been a longtime Nefarious Supply favorite, and her release of the sleek and beautifully deliberate EP, Sensitive has rightfully put her on the map as a rising artist for Chicago to most definitely keep her eye on.

As standout singles such as Sensitive and Valentina show Serena’s versatility has an RnB artist in her field, being able to switch between different styles of flow and tackle different and often difficult topics lyrically with ease, and even a sense of finesse, Move, featuring fellow upcoming artist, Hatesonny, takes the cake for us.

The supple and prominent production underneath both artists’ vocals adds a sense of buoyancy for Serena and Hatesonny to ride, in which they do perfectly. On the track Serena laments the club but goes anyway because why not when your bank account’s full? Hatesonny slides on like the deuteragonist in a buddy cop movie, throwing alley-oops back and forth to Serena throughout the remainder of the track and as the three minutes and twelve seconds reach that last note you’re filled with a sense of nostalgia, longing, and satisfaction, all in one.

BBE Chinaman - Underdog

BBE Chinaman is a DMV native who has been on our radar since the drop of his track LIFESTYLE last year. The rapper is rising in the area for his quick yet heavy delivery, and his effortless flow switches. Underdog is something of a self-explanatory track, where the artist reveals his struggles with lost friends, an absent father, his drive to get to the top, his condemnation of any beef that comes his way.

Room Noir - Grow (ft. Amaya Alicia)

Produced by Nefarious fav, Downsilence, Room Noir debuts on our Isolation Station with is murky and aesthetically pleasing track, Grow. Noir speaks on topics of emotional development, staying faithful and grounded in your significant, while Amaya Alicia slides on the beat as smooth as can be. She laments about the hustle and bustle of their lives, however reconciles by knowing that they have grown together and want this for each other.

Roseryhills - Settle Down (ft. Dazeoneast)

Two of our favorite artists, Roseryhills and Dazeoneast have collaborated on this steamy and comfy track. The two blend their voices like butter on toast and at some point you just have to sit back and admire the beautiful crooning mixed with the warm and expansive production. Daze’s verse guides the listener along to the latter half of the track. His flow is distinctly different from Rosery’s however it only adds another layer to this already delectable cake. The voice message at the end is a beautiful touch too.

Dontaskgen - Honey on the Hive

Dontaskgen’s second breakout single since his album dontaskforlove. Dontaskgen is another Nefarious favorite and you check out his interview here! On Hone on the Hive, Gen is caught between pain and pleasure. He knows the situation he’s getting himself into is either going to hurt him going in or eventually, however, he likes the pain, embraces it even, in order to get to that symbolic “honey” which I’m sure could mean many things to many people. Honey on the Hive is a racy and deliberate track over a very dark and full production style, making it another smooth beauty from Dontaskgen.

Apollo1027 - LIFE I CHOSE

Apollo1027 is back with his new “leaked” single LIFE I CHOSE. Apollo is smooth and on point throughout the entirety of the track, bringing the topic statement of this week’s Isolation Station to a head. Apollo knows exactly what he’s gotten himself into with getting into the music industry and he doesn’t regret it one bit. He promises to bring his entire team up with him to the top and knows he isn’t going to fold. The beat switch at the end was a nice touch, wrapping up the song in a lovely bow.

KXRIUKI: The Dawn of a NEWERA.

Recently, it seems as though artists are finally coming to terms with the fact that they can’t lead the exclusive and extravagant lifestyles they once indulged in as if the self-isolative routines have made peace with the inner cogs in the creative machine. While some might call it depressing and lonely, I think it allows artists to experiment with out-of-the-box ideas they had in their closets. As if the insecurity of the outside world has faded away because all there is – at least right now – is the inside world.

About a week ago I was scouting and lurking around on Twitter. While I was retweeting random threads and looking for artists, I stumbled upon KXRIUKI: an 18-year-old rapper from Houston, TX with the best Earl Sweatshirt/Knxwledge vibe to his music I’ve heard in a long time. His only project: NEW ERA (released on the 19th of June) has been on repeat ever since it dropped in mid-June. It’s a perfect mix of jazz, muddy acoustics, monotone rap delivery and Kanye-esque production style.

Before jumping into the album review, I was able to ask KX a few questions about his inspirations, aspirations, and general opinion on the modern-day rap scene:

Hey man! I loved your project and wanted to ask you a few questions! Could you give a quick bio about yourself?

I’m from Houston TX, originally from NY though. my biggest inspirations music-wise is Earl Sweatshirt’s poetic lyricism and Knxwledge's lo-fi production. Overall my biggest influence is Kanye West, giving me the confidence to do anything I want.

Yeah, your EP really shows off all those sounds that you expertly pulled off! Kudos to you on that for sure. What are you trying to do with your music? What’s the thought process behind it?

With my music influence, I just wanna show more insecure and indecisive kids like myself that they can do whatever they want to.

Is that because you’re 100% self-made? Is it all off the dome and at the moment?

Yeah! Its all me bro. I do my own production and write my own lyrics. I’m sick of folks not being real with their art. Art needs to reflect the artist.

That makes sense; people need to see themselves in their art. Does being self-made speak on a person’s work ethic to you?

Not even the work ethic, just a reflection of them. Their story, their character, etc. I just believe the BEST way of doing that is by being mostly self-made.

I see that makes sense! Could you talk about the songs on the EP? What do they all mean?

NEWERA. (title track) means exactly what it’s named. it’s a new era for me as a person, I just recently graduated high school, I’ve adopted plenty of new ideas and morals as a person, and most importantly time to go harder than ever as an artist. it’s a NEWERA. For KXRIUKI.

The 2 middle tracks represent my duality. more present on ENVYME//stolenmoments, the first half is me celebrating myself and all the great things I know I’m capable, but the stolenmoments half is me recognizing my downsides, and the demons I face daily.

Even the capitalization shows you which track means what. NEWERA, HIGHMILEAGE, and ENVYME (all caps) is me talking about my greatness and where I’m GONNA be, but dummy, stolenmoments, and selfmade is me recognizing my past and the things I faced to get here.

Oh, interesting! So you set up the EP to contrast both sides of your psyche and growth as a person and an artist?

Exactly that!

I like that a lot dude; I noticed that there are a lot of jazz influences with the samples and beat you have going on in the background, is that how you’re abler to put emphasis on specific lyrics and stories?

I feel like jazz-influenced production is the best way to get my point across. Softer tones=more attention to what’s being said.

That concludes the interview segment of this article; time for the review.

This EP is very short but very sweet. With only 4 songs on here (6 if you’re following KX’s explanation of the two middle tracks), I think he was truly able to drive his point across regardless of record runtime. First off: NEWERA is a great introductory track to the overall vibe of this record with the psychedelic, muddy, and oversaturated vocals layered on the smooth jazz/elevator music sample in the background. The lyricism is on point with this track, explaining the disparity within the rap scene in general and elaborating on how KX is going to rise above the competition, starting his own new era. While some listeners might get a little bored of the monotone delivery and just chalk this up to be a mediocre Earl impression; I urge you to keep listening. The title track doesn’t do this record enough justice as it just sets you up for a vibe right after it.

HIGHMILEAGE//dummy is one of two tracks that shows the stark contrast of style and flow that KX can flip flop between with ease. The track starts off with a swooshing harmonic backdrop and booming bassline with an off-beat drum pattern as well – in layman’s terms – in blend between funk and jazz. Coupled with another Earl delivery, KX talks about his successes and how he’s finally feeling his music while also reminding himself of the challenges he’s going to face as an aspiring artist. As soon as you think the song is over, KX switches the beat to a slow jam-style beat with dreamy vocals coating the track with a layer of mystery and ambiguity as the phrase “don’t try to play me” is repeated till the end of the track.

ENVYME//stolenmoments is the BANGER of the EP. KX goes much harder on this track than the previous ones, calling out all the fake artists out there complaining about his music and production when - in reality - they’re just too prideful to just vibe with it. This is where the Kanye influences show their true colors as the production is bouncy, the melody is a very sweet piano groove and the 808s are loud and bumping.

And finally, the last song on this mini collection of mastery in art is selfmade. KX raps about how everything he’s made has been entirely by his own determination, design, and ambition to rise above the competition and secure his spot as a household name without asking anyone for a favor or support. While support is always good to ask for, the dependency on it can stagger a creative. This fantastic part of lyricism is complemented by a jazz/big band ensemble sample in the background, littered with a few piano chords to add a sparkly, silky smooth harmonic line in contrast with his own voice.

All in all, while I think KXRIUKI has something he might want to work on (differentiating in his sound-sphere, simplifying his sound by making the background sample less busy and an overall revaluation of his rap delivery), I believe that – for a first EP – this is a stellar piece of music that is radically under-appreciated and unheard of. In short: a solid 7.5/10 on my scale, a definite must-listen-to those that are fans of Earl Sweatshirt and a great start that paves a positive outlook for KX’s future as an artist!

Amaka Quenette - Ceilings

“It’s a fine night to feel infinite, but we’re infinitely finite”

These are turbulent times of social, political, and ethical strife within America, and the continuous revealing of the terrible deeds this country has dealt to its citizens time and time again, especially towards the black community. Black women are left disrespected and unprotected on all fronts, these individuals being the same ones on the front line, fighting for justice. Our black men are being lynched right in front of our very eyes, and no one is doing anything.

We’re in a trying time right now. But there is no fault in slowing down, if only a little. Amaka Queenette allows us to do just that, with her track, Ceilings.

Amaka wraps up the explanation of her track, Ceilings, beautifully within the chorus, stating that though it is a fine night to feel infinite, we’re still infinitely finite, our mortality and beautiful identity as humans brings will always ground us in our realities, and keep our minds clear on the path ahead, whether its to love, happiness, or justice.

The reason I believe this song is necessary, is to remind us who the real enemy is, as well as who we need to protect, and support. Let’s ground ourselves and shield our black women, let’s come together, and let’s push towards an infinitely brighter future.

IDK - IDK & FRIENDS 2

IDK is back! Yes, the DMV native has come back with another project after his incredible debut album, Is He Real? A second part to his IDK & FRIENDS, which helmed mainly DMV artists on the tape, including Q Da Fool, Rico Nasty, and Wale, with heavy additions such as Denzel Curry and Maxo Kream, IDK & FRIENDS 2 takes this concept a step further.

Newcomers to the friend’s list this year include producers Ronny J, Juicy J, and JetsonMade, along wieth many others, and new DMV link-ups such as Xanman, Big Jam, Yungmanny, and Big Flock, as well as others like PNB Rock and Alex Vaughn.

The tape is actually a soundtrack for NBA star, Kevin Durant’s Showtime documentary, Basketball County: In the Water. Both Kevin Durant and IDK are from PG County, Maryland, which is how they were able to connect for the project.

OMERTÀ

Shut the f*ck up

Our intro track for this project, presents IDK telling an unknown individual to stop running his mouth. The word Omertà is a Southern Italian code of silence and code of honor that places importance on silence in the face of questioning by authorities or outsiders. Basically, IDK is conveying that silence is power, and opening your mouth could end up being your downfall.

RILEY (ft. Xanman)

Indian plug, hold up, that n**** got work in a taxi cab

RILEY places Xanman right in his home in terms of production, with heavy 808s, hard piano keys, and an even harder beat to pull it all together. Xanman comes on with the infectious chorus before spitting verses on internet haters, shooters, moonwalking, Scooby Snacks, and his Indian plug. He alley-oops to IDK who slides onto the beat effortlessly, with the lyricism that solidifies this track a golden starter to the tape. As IDK says, he’s doing quite well for a Largo dropout.

MAZEL TOV (ft. A$AP Ferg)

Mazel Tov to the Gang

Started with a beautiful flute melody, the 808s crash into MAZEL TOV like a wave and by the time IDK’s first verse starts, you’re guaranteed to be already nodding your head and scrunching your face. On the track, IDK speaks on topics of fake friends, his lack of support from certain people in the early stages of his artistry, and oh yeah, his Jewish taxpayers. Ferg’s verse was as creative and flow-crazy as is expected of an artist of his caliber, tying a neat and hard bow on a fire track.

SQUARE UP (ft. Juicy J)

B*tch don’t call my phone no more, I don’t got no time for you fake ass h*es

One of our favorite tracks from the tape, considering it is the first track we actually see an IDK and Juicy J-. The frantic, running melody and the heavy, yet subtle 808s underneath give more bang to the percussion and hi-hats when they blend together. IDK’s vocals can be heard in the background, crooning with silent reverb and adding a delicate layer.

The DMV native spits with confidence and pride, showing no fear in his lyrics or topic of delivery. The bridge towards the second half of the track is a nice momentum builder for smooth, whimsical, and adlib-worthy Juicy J verse that follows.

BULLETPROOF (ft. Denzel Curry & Maxo Kream)

Think you bulletproof, ‘til my shooters shoot

BULLETPROOF rushes out the gate with a wavy Denzel and IDK bridge/chorus. The hook ignites the track before the first word of a verse is even said. The murky beat and overall dusky production with eerie chimes and weird synths, create the dark atmosphere where these artists thrive, especially Maxo Kream, who slid on his verse with perfection. Themes of young shooters, dead friends, and the promise to end any beef with a bullet.

END OF DISCUSSION (ft. PNB Rock)

She ain’t suckin, she ain’t f*ckin, end of discussion

One of the more sing-songy tracks on “IDK & FRIENDS 2”, END OF DISCUSSION has PNB Rock and IDK trading verses back and forth on the topic of broke haters, spending money simply because they can, stunting on those who’re out of their league, and moving out of the way of females who don’t have the energy they both desire. Creative and hard-hitting bars are littered throughout the track from both artists.

TOOTH FAIRY

Like a tooth under the pillow I get money when I sleep

When we heard that “Oh my god, Ronny!” tag on an IDK track, we at Nefarious can confirm that we almost screamed. IDK utilizes Ronny J’s production beautifully, hitting the pockets in the beat he needs to strike fire with every word that lands. IDK talks about the usual haters, getting money when he sleeps, comparing his moves to those with his name in their mouth.

495 (ft. YungManny, Big Flock, Big Jam, & Rico Nasty)

LIVE FOR IT (ft. Wale & Alex Vaughn)

You the MVP for it, and ball for it, yeah yeah

The slowest track on the tape, the keys on an organ piano leads LIVE FOR IT from start to finish, with the rest of the production swelling and building around it. Wale has a beautiful opening verse that sets the tone for the rest of the track, and Alex Vaughn’s iridescent vocals color the track a pretty color needed to blanket over IDK and Wale’s lyricism. The track fades out, taking elements from the production out subtly, as Wale ends of the project with the dimming bridge.

Tré Ahmad first things first we wanted to thank you for coming on and interviewing with Nefarious Supply, so just to get the interview started introduce yourself who is Tré Ahmad and what got you started in music?

Thank you. I really appreciate it for real. In short, I’m a creative introvert. I like to say I’m an artist whose medium just happens to be words and sounds. I think I got my start in church as a kid. My mom was the youth choir director, my aunt played piano, my older brother played drums, and my two sisters and I sang in the choir. My first memories of getting goosebumps or crying to music was in church. Since then I’ve just chased those feelings in music in general. Then when I was about 12 or 13 years old my brother started recording with his friends but kind of leaving me behind. And one weekend, he borrowed his friend's microphone and interface and wasn’t home to record because he was touring a college I think. So on Saturday I “wrote a song” which was just a remix to Asher Roth’s “I Love College” that I just called “I Hate Middle School”. Then Sunday night I recorded it, used microsoft paint to draw some horrible cover art, and uploaded it to Youtube. On Monday, after sharing it with two of my friends, it felt like the song was all the kids at school were talking about and it was a feeling that I never wanted to let go of. I haven’t stopped recording since.

So where are you from, and how has this area contributed to your overall sound and image as an artist?

I’m from North Carolina so there’s a lot of southern rap that was and is played a lot here. So I can definitely attribute my desire for a shit ton of bass in my songs to the south. I would say I get my grit and my confidence from the south too. I’m also a ‘97 baby so I was raised on the internet and have always had access to music and cultures that are outside of my physical reach. I’d say I got my ability to be diverse and vary my sound a lot from being raised on the internet.

In addition to that tell us about the underground music scene within the area?

I’m from Concord, NC so the “underground” scene here in my perspective has just been Hoodies and my bro’s MoonLander and Cameron Butler haha but I would say the Charlotte underground scene has been one of my favorites to watch. They feel like next door neighbors that have a house 10 times the size of ours so there’s a lot more range of underground artists in the Charlotte underground scene. There’s a lot of fun music and also a lot of introspective, chill music. Thanks to The Bleus, I get to be a part of their culture and shows a lot which is really exciting and fun

What artists you would say have had the biggest influence on you, your sound, and your goals as an artist?

This question is hilarious to me because I feel like anyone that’s a fan of mine or has ever been around me knows the answer to this question. There’s a lot of artists that I’ve been influenced by but the artist that’s influenced me the most is Frank Ocean. Since about 14, he’s been my reminder to own who I am and move with intention. I wouldn’t say that I sound anything like him but my choice of words and lyricism are products of listening to Frank Ocean on repeat since highschool haha.

What got you started making music, and what are some important lessons you have learned since you started? 

I think one of the most important things that I’ve learned is that there is freedom in listening to yourself. At least that’s how I find my freedom. If I try to define myself by anyone else’s standards except my own, am I really free? Making music taught me to have more faith in that little voice in my head that tells me what I really want to do or say.

What is some advice you have for new artists who haven’t started yet?

Trust yourself but be patient. I think a lot of the times when we start something new we’re quick to write it off if we can’t quickly accomplish whatever we had set out to do. My first try at producing was at like 13 and I tried to steal a melody from a song that I was learning in band class to start a beat on FL Studio. I stopped because I couldn’t learn it on my own and I didn’t try to start producing again until I was 18. I wish I would’ve trusted myself more and started to produce at an earlier age.

Tell us about the Secret Hoodie Club?

The Secret Hoodie Club is like a Marvel universe to me. Anybody that’s a part of it is like a hero to me. Anybody that’s a fan of Hoodies or a close friend of mine is in The Secret Hoodie Club. Shoutout 00gang. Hoodies is a band that I helped start. It’s not a traditional band though. Think of it like a band where at anypoint any band member can be the lead singer. We all produce, write, and record. There’s Matt Square, Mike Laaarry, Ed Van Soul, and ForeverKion. My journey with them is a whole nother story but I feel like my best version of an artist when I’m making music with them. And our debut album Hot Mess is my favorite album of all-time lmao.

Let’s get into your music i gotta say really your music really caught my attention but favorite song from you is “Forgive Me Leak”, what inspired that song? 

That’s hilarious! That song is kind of a joke for me. I never planned on actually releasing it. I had a hard time recording to a beat that Julian (Ed Van Soul) had sent me and it was getting really late at night. I think it might've been two in the morning. So I started kind of losing my mind haha. I started freestyling in this really terrible british accent and it made me laugh so I kept it. But it wasn’t until about a month later that my friends convinced me to put it out on Soundcloud.

Tell us about your newest song “Call On Me”.

Call On Me is a more serious song. I produced and recorded it early in february this year. It’s a really honest song about the end of a weird break up. I think it’s a song that helped define my sound as an artist outside of Hoodies. I tend to write a lot of songs that blur the lines between rapping and singing and I’m very upfront with my emotions and my internal struggles. 

So my favirote project from you is Cents - EP it's an amazing EP bro so just tell us about that as well what inspired it, and who do you work with on production as well as mixing and mastering. 

Haha that actually came out in 2018 but ended up being taken off of streaming about 6 months after it came out because of problems I was having with the distribution company at the time. After releasing the Hoodies album in November 2019, I wanted to reupload some of the music that was taken down so in January 2020 I put the “Cents EP” and the “Honey EP” back up using a new distribution company. It was mostly inspired by Erykah Badu though.

When do you plan on releasing your debut album?

I don’t want to make any promises but if the timing is right then it could be before the end of the year. I’ve just been enjoying creating for now.

So what’s next for you, what are some goals you hope to accomplish in 2020?

I really just want to stay healthy and continue progressing. I’d love to perform when it’s safe for everybody outside again. I’ve really been missing that aspect of the music lately.

[MYMHM 3] pinkplata & Moflo Music - SON LAS DOS AM

pinkplata, the Guadalajara born, and now California-based artist, gave us a two-track gift basket on her newest collaboration with well-known underground producer, Moflo Music. The two collaborated on another project the year prior titled YA VOLO, which was double the amount of tracks as this one.

However, SON LAS DOS AM delivers in every way it was expected to when it comes to this duo, and solidifies pinkplata as an upcoming latin R&B artist to certainly keep your eyes on.

Below we take a brief look at the themes and concepts that come forth in this project, take a look below! 😈

Yo Te Aviso

A very latin-based and groovy production by Moflo from start to finish, Yo Te Aviso smoothly and subtly compliments Pink’s soft and sultry voice as she glides across the beat, effortlessly switching between Spanish and English (though the track is mostly sung in the former language. The chorus shows the artist’s longing for more time from her significant other, reminiscing about those 2 AM car rides with them and wondering if they could ever go back to those nights.

Frng

A beautiful follow-up to the prior track, Moflo takes the production of Frng to another aspect of a very similar style. As if a Side B to Yo Te Avisa, this track is a light-hearted and cloudy finish to the two-track project. Sanguine lyricism from Pink fall atop the beat light as a feather, yet heavy enough leave an impression for the next verse, leading you all the way through the remainder of the song without wanting it to end!

Hey Amaka Queenette first things first I wanted to thank you for agreeing to interview with Nefarious Supply. Just to get started, introduce yourself to the audience who is Amaka Queenette, and what events led up to you taking up a career as a musician?

I just always gravitated towards music. I was born in Nigeria and most of my memories there involve music; early morning worship, church, school events. My parents would always play music on a Sunday morning as we got ready for church as well. Music has just always been there. And it's never felt like a choice, just like why wouldn't I continue to want it around? Addition though, as I work to make music a career, I am also in nursing school as well. Was on a year off from school this past year to finish off a few music projects though. I'm trying to have it all; best of both lives.

Being currently based in Pickering, Ontario how would you say this area has had an influence on you as well as your music?

As much as I know I want to see the world, my safe little suburban slice of Pickering is such a home to me. My house is surrounded by a stream, a park and a forest so I always have places to hide when I need to. I think because I can be considered "comfortable" where I am, it gives me mental space and capacity to dive deeper into the intricacies of my experiences and how they affect my emotional and mental well-being. Being where I am has surrounded me with some amazing East end talent without feeling too suffocated- which I do tend to feel when in Toronto. I love the idea of having to hop on a GO train to get downtown. It makes the city such a novelty. More romantic and wistful that way.

What artists would you say have had the biggest influence on you, and how have they done so? 

Musically I don't know that I have too many influences. But I do try to chase the feeling an artist gives me. Kanye's confidence and way-paving, makes me want to be braver. Erykah's uniqueness and claiming "I may not be ____ but I'm clever" really resonated with me. I think I'm so clever and like she taught me it's okay to think that about yourself. Frank Ocean of course makes me want to make music people can cry to as they think about their first experiences with love or any unrequited loves.

Tell us about Tomboy Records and how did you end up getting signed to them as an artist? 

So I met Cassandra, my current manager and one of the founders of Tomboy Records when she DM'ed me at the end of 2018. Cass had seen one of my covers and apparently really liked it and thought my voice was unique. We also had a mutual friend who kind of helped make that connection. Then we started talking and I mentioned a concert I wanted to curate in August 2019. They really had my back every step of that process. They helped make it possible and we've been together since!

Since you’ve started your career what are some important lessons you have learned, and what is some advice you would give to new artists? 

I still 100% consider myself a new artist. But what I've learned is that there will always be people who think like you. The doubt will come, second guessing your ideas will happen. But trusting your instincts is a must or you'll just find yourself floating. Or find yourself performing songs live that you don't even like or really believe in. Another thing I learned is that a team is important. It's not everything and we as humans can accomplish so much alone, especially when we have to. But I say, if you have the option of working with people you like and trust with your ideas, please do. It makes the process much sweeter and this way, you have someone to panic to at 3am the day before a release.

So let’s talk about your newest EP “Fleeting Inconsequential”, what inspired it?

Those 2 words in sequence came from the movie 'The Age of Adaline'. I love movies so much, and movies that are sentimental about the passing of time always get me. Time moving and us not being able to do anything about it is such a scary concept for me, but it's one that I force myself to sink into and fully feel because that's the reality of things and avoiding it would be unwise. 'Fleeting, Inconsequential' is a body of work that addresses loves and lives past. The title was inspired by that movie, but the concepts in it are ones that take up my mind a lot. The project is inspired by fear of the ever-changing and the seeming insignificance of a single human life.

Walk us through each of their songs and their meaning to you? 

'Suffocate' is about a love that doesn't exist on both sides anymore. It's strictly single sided now. It's about giving everything to a relationship and still ending up empty and without. It's not my exact personal experience because I've never been able to give 100% into any romantic relationship I've been in, there's a lot of fear there for me. So I guess I reached out to those around me who had fallen in love so completely and I lived vicariously through them. I collected and compiled their stories, I channeled the feeling I got when I thought about being completely in love and the output was 'Suffocate'. The song feels a little frantic and unsettling sometimes and there are random time signature changes here and there. All of this kinda reflects that discomfort I feel thinking about love and how it can come and go so fast, hence 'fleeting'.

'Ceilings' is then again about this idea of time moving faster than I'm ready for. I get tired thinking about all the things I've done and all that I still plan to do. And sometimes I just want to either live fully, taking in every beautiful moment. And other times I just want to sleep and pass my time alone. The line "it's a fine night to feel infinite but we're infinitely finite" really summarizes 'Ceilings'. It basically translates into: in this moment right now, I feel infinite (a paraphrased line from the movie 'Perks of Being a Wallflower'), life is beautiful, existence in itself is beautiful and is such a privilege, but I also can't shake the feeling that every moment is just a blip in the grand scheme of my life. Hence, 'inconsequential'.

So on the production end what producers as well as engineers did you work with for EP?

Executive Producer is Joshua Stanberry. That boy is such a rockstar. He produces everything I release. Sitting with me or over the phone, everything I do has him written all over it.  I also had a role in the production of those 2 songs as well. Although the term "producer" to me feels so broad. I never know all the title entails, but I played roles here and there in the composition. The mix engineer is the master, Adam Pondang. He is incredible; so patient with all my notes and so attentive to detail. He treats all my songs with respect. He mixes and produces for LOONY, and he's mixed everything I've released. Other credits on this EP are Justice Der on guitar, Stephen Bennett on drums, and Joshua Stanberry on bass (they are all music students at Humber college).

So what’s next for you, what are some goals you want to achieve by the end of the year?

 So by the end of this year, I'd love to release one or two more singles. I definitely have stuff in the works and bigger projects in the far future, but for now a single or two here and there. The pandemic has set some things behind and definitely messed with my motivation levels, but I am still working and chipping away at projects. So a few singles should emerge by year's end. Then in September, I'm off to nursing school again! I actually wrote my entire first EP while in first year UNI so I always make time for music while I'm there.

Nothing too exciting, just thank-you for caring about my music and what I'm up to. Appreciate your time and you amazing questions. I love music with my whole heart; it's the thing that cuts through the apathy and reminds me of the parts of myself I'm sometimes afraid to address in my day to day life. So I'm grateful to get to talk about it with you guys.

Celebrating Juneteenth

Like every country, globally, the United States has a culture that is deeply rooted in the history of important events or people that have left their mark and influenced the country to make it what it is today, whether socially or economically. To remember these important events and figures of the country, certain days are marked as special and made as national holidays for the rest to pay our respects to past events or figures. Some important public holidays in American culture include; Independence Day, celebrated annually on July 4th, and Memorial Day, celebrated on the last Monday of May, and is revered as a national day of remembrance for the lives lost in the Civil War. There’s also Labor Day, which was started in 1886 and focuses on celebrating the achievements of the working people within the United States. Veterans Day, observed November 11, and is a day to honor the veterans and soldiers in the United States Armed Forces and many more. These are very important to American history, and there is no doubt that the celebrations held during days are for remembering events or people that have influenced the type of country that America has become. But a day that unfortunately is just now getting the national attention it deserves, is Juneteenth, and with the current movement centered around Black struggles within the United States, Juneteenth should be federal. 

Juneteenth (Which is a combination of June and nineteenth) also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, as well as Emancipation Day, is a holiday within the African American community that celebrates the liberation of slaves in the United States. With roots in Texas, the holiday is especially commemorating Union Army General Gordon Granger, who announced the Federal orders in Galveston Texas on June 19. 1865 saying "all people held as slaves in Texas were free". 

The first celebrations of the holiday started in 1866, but soon spread across the Southern African American Community and started to gain some traction in the late 1920s and into the 1930s, often centering around food. Although the celebration of the Holiday lost its traction during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, by the mid-1970's, the holiday once again became an important celebration of the era fueled by the focus on African American freedom and arts. As of now in the 21st century, Juneteenth is celebrated across most states in the country with some recognizing the Holiday as paid day of rest and others who do not acknowledge it all which includes; Hawaii, North Dakota, and South Dakota. 

Juneteenth should be made a federal holiday because it will allow America to finally come to terms with its less than ideal history, as well as its treatment of black people within its borders. While the actual date of Juneteenth does not coincide with the actual abolishment of slavery in the United States (December 6, 1865), the meaning behind the holiday is what is important. At one point in time slavery was very important to the economic structure of the United States, especially in the southern region of the country. During the peak of the slave trade within the country and even up until it ended the Africans that were brought over were not viewed as people, rather cattle and property that could have been treated in any way. This view of Africans within the United States is what had a direct effect on how African Americans have been treated in this country, as well as the systematic racism faced every day. 

As the late writer, James Balwldin, once said; "Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced", and facing its less than ideal past is something the United States needs to formally come out and acknowledge, because without coming to terms about the past the country is unable to move forward and tackle today’s issues. While Juneteenth is primarily celebrated within the African American community, the holiday should be celebrated nationally, because it acknowledges the less than ideal start that people of African descent have had to deal with within this country, as well as celebrating the many achievements and contributions black people have given its society. Ranging from music, technology, medicine, and social change, the black community has always been given less, and yet always come through with more, and this understanding should formally be recognized and celebrated, not only within the African American Community, but the entirety of the United States as well. The US has a massive population of people who have different backgrounds and cultures. A large share of that population is of African descent and direct descendants of the individuals who fought hard for quality during the Civil Rights Movement. By making Juneteenth a federal holiday, it allows us, as a whole, to take a step back and focus on how our history has got us to where we are right now and what steps can we take to ensure we are never at this point again.
