Josif Grey, Representing New Haven
Who is Josif Grey give us a brief summary about yourself, and your artistry?
I am a 21-year-old artist from New Haven, Connecticut born and raised. I’m really a normal kid I grew up playing video games and sports. I went to a private middle school and high school I was never in any trouble. I saw a future in basketball before anything, but when I transferred to public high school after my sophomore year at the private school. I didn't make the ball team and that kind of fucked me up. I started writing and making music when I was 16 / 17 and I put a lot of energy into it.
I was self-conscious about all my stuff so I didn’t tell anyone about it besides my close family which has been supportive throughout my journey. I started by putting music on SoundCloud under different names until I came up with “Josif Grey”. The name “Grey” represents me in a way because I am usually in the grey area with a lot of things, I like to stay neutral and out of the way. It is also a very marketable/professional ring to it which I like as well, but there isn't really deep meaning behind i
Where are you from and how has your location played a factor in your music?
Being from New Haven there a lot of local artists, but I can't say they have influenced me in any way I’ve always made the music I liked regardless of the trend. I think being YOU is the key to being “different”.
Who and what are some of your biggest inspirations to date, and how have they influenced your creativity?
I listen to many genres of music, but starting out I listened to Pro Era, Logic, and Mick Jenkins which really inspired me to rap. After that PND and Bryson Tiller came into the spotlight and they really influenced me to tap into that Trap R&B. I’d say those are the people who gave me that core inspiration and since then I’ve been growing and trying to learn from each song I make.
I really like your latest body of work “Shock EP” can you tell us more about it, what kind of sound were going for?
Funny story how the “Shock EP” came to life, I was sitting in my room one day and I was going through songs on my laptop. I’ve been wanting to release the song “Lifestyle” with my brother Channel, but I was so caught up with newer music that it got lost in the mix. If you’re an artist reading this you know those throwaway tracks that don't make the cut you kind of stow them away in the vault and they’re never heard.
I had a bright idea to put a few of my throwaways all on an EP because if I was to put them out alone they wouldn't do as well. That same night I gathered all the songs I wanted throwaways from 1-2 years ago to throwaways from this year. I kind of just leaked my own shit in a way and it turned out good. I got good feedback and some of those songs I can perform and people will know them.
